Home Based Accountant information

What is a home based accountant?

A home based accountant is a professional who manages financial records, prepares tax returns, and offers accounting services while working remotely from their home. They may work for a company, an accounting firm, or operate as independent contractors serving multiple clients. Home based accountants use digital tools to communicate with clients, process financial data, and ensure compliance with financial regulations. This flexible arrangement allows them to balance work and personal life, reduce commuting time, and often serve clients from various locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a home based accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Home Based Accountant, you need strong accounting knowledge, attention to detail, and a relevant degree or certification such as CPA or ACCA. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage, and secure file-sharing systems is typically required. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear communication skills help remote accountants stand out. These abilities ensure accurate financial management, client trust, and efficient delivery of services in a remote work environment.

How do home based accountants typically manage communication and collaboration with clients and team members?

Home based accountants often rely on digital tools such as email, video conferencing, cloud-based accounting software, and project management platforms to stay connected with clients and colleagues. Effective communication is essential for clarifying financial information, addressing client inquiries, and coordinating with other professionals like tax advisors or auditors. Establishing regular check-ins and clear response times helps maintain professionalism and trust, even when working remotely. Adapting to these virtual collaboration methods is a key aspect of succeeding as a home based accountant.

Both roles can be performed remotely and are essential in the financial industry, but they differ in scope and complexity of tasks.

How much does a home based accountant make?

A home-based accountant's salary typically ranges from $45,000 to $75,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and client base. Many work freelance or independently, setting their own rates and schedules, often using accounting software like QuickBooks or Excel.

Is it possible for a home based accountant to work from home?

Yes, a home based accountant can work from home, often using accounting software and communication tools to perform tasks such as bookkeeping, tax preparation, and financial analysis remotely. Midland Care Connection is a not-for-profit, community-based organization dedicated to helping older adults and seriously ill individuals stay independent and supported in their homes. Established in 1978, we offer a full continuum of care, including hospice, palliative care, home health, grief and loss counseling, and our signature PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) program. Our mission centers on "meeting individual needs through innovative care solutions," and we serve people across multiple counties in northeast Kansas.

The Staff Accountant also reviews and reconciles Medicare, Medicaid, and private-pay payments, compares aging reports from the electronic medical record system with the accounting system, and assists with claim processing to ensure accurate and timely payments. In addition, the position supports financial reporting and projects, maintains financial spreadsheets, responds to financial questions, and works closely with staff across departments. Overall, the Staff Accountant helps ensure Midland Care’s financial records are accurate, compliant, and efficiently maintained while identifying opportunities to improve accounting processes and support the organization’s financial goals.

  • Ability to accurately manage and analyze financial data
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organization
  • Ability to maintain and work with financial spreadsheets and accounting systems
  • Ability to understand and follow organizational policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff across different departments
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and meet reporting deadlines
  • Willingness to learn and use evolving technology and financial systems

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
  • Previous experience in a staff accountant or similar accounting position
  • Experience with general ledger accounting, journal entries, and monthly reconciliations
  • Experience working with Medicare, Medicaid, private-pay, healthcare billing, or claims
  • Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and accounting software
  • Strong Microsoft Excel/spreadsheet skills
  • Experience analyzing financial reports and identifying variances or discrepancies
  • Experience working in a healthcare, nonprofit, or human-services organization
  • Familiarity with applicable healthcare and financial regulations

What’s in it for you?

  • Health insurance options for employees and dependents
  • Dental, vision, and prescription drug plans
  • Flexible Savings Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Accounts (HSA), with employer contributions
  • Paid Time Off (PTO), Personal and Taking Care of You Days
  • Holiday pay (six holidays per year)
  • 403(b) ERISA Retirement Plan, match provided
  • Free group life and AD&D insurance of $20,000
  • On-site education center to provide professional development and CEU credits
  • Free Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for employees and dependents
  • Paid monthly volunteer time at non-profit organizations
  • Uniform Allowance Program
