What does an HL7 Integration Developer do?

An HL7 Integration Developer specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining interfaces that allow healthcare systems to exchange data using HL7 standards. They work closely with hospitals, clinics, and software vendors to ensure patient information flows smoothly and securely between various electronic health record (EHR) systems. Their responsibilities also include troubleshooting integration issues, implementing new data exchange solutions, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. Strong knowledge of HL7 protocols, healthcare IT systems, and programming languages is essential for this role.

What are some common challenges faced by HL7 Integration Developers when working with multiple healthcare systems?

HL7 Integration Developers often encounter challenges related to varying interpretations of HL7 standards across different healthcare systems. Each hospital or vendor may customize HL7 messages, requiring developers to adapt interfaces and handle exceptions. Additionally, managing data consistency and ensuring secure, real-time data exchange can be complex due to legacy systems or limited documentation. Effective communication with clinical, technical, and vendor teams is essential to troubleshoot issues and deliver seamless integrations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HL7 Integration Developer, and why are they important?

To excel as an HL7 Integration Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Java, C#, or Python), in-depth knowledge of HL7 messaging standards, and experience with healthcare interoperability. Familiarity with integration engines such as Mirth Connect, Cloverleaf, or Rhapsody, and relevant certifications like HL7 or FHIR, are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart. These skills are crucial for ensuring seamless data exchange, maintaining compliance, and supporting efficient healthcare workflows.

Job description

About Clear Labs

Clear Labs harnesses the power of next-generation sequencing (NGS) to simplify complex diagnostics for clinical and applied markets. By creating a fully automated platform that brings together DNA sequencing, robotics, and cloud-based analytics, Clear Labs democratizes genomics applications to deliver better clarity. Clear Labs' turnkey platform accelerates outcomes and improves accuracy from food-borne pathogens to infectious diseases.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Mid-Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our lean, high-impact engineering team. This role is a critical replacement for a key team member and focuses on the "connective tissue" of our platform-building robust backend services and complex integrations between our physical lab hardware and cloud-based ecosystem.

You will be responsible for translating complex business requirements into clean, tested code that runs across our GCP stack and on-prem services. This isn't just about writing APIs; it's about architecting resilient systems that integrate with major bioinformatics platforms, specialized software, and clinical middleware (LIMS/EHR).

Primary Responsibilities

  • Backend & On-site Instrument Service Development: Develop and maintain 30+ microservices and databases. You will own the full lifecycle of backend features, from Domain-Driven Design (DDD) to implementation and testing.
  • Systems Integration: Analyze and build seamless bridges between Clear Labs and external partners (e.g., external analysis pipelines and LIMS/EHR middleware).
  • Architecture & Design: Drive the technical design of scalable, resilient, distributed systems using Kubernetes (GKE), Pub/Sub, and MySQL.
  • On-Market Support: Act as a high-level tier for production escalations, providing triaging and troubleshooting for issues within the backend and grid service layers.
  • Performance & Resilience: Optimize existing services for scalability as our customer base and data volume grow.
  • Security & Compliance: Contribute to the hardening of our systems as we move toward SOC2 and ISO 27001 compliance.

Requirements

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; no visa sponsorship is available for this position.

Position Requirements

  • Experience: 4+ years of professional software development experience, with a heavy focus on backend systems.
  • Language Proficiency: Deep understanding of Java, Javascript/Typescript, or Python.
  • Testing: Has a strong affinity for writing unit and integration tests
  • Cloud & Infrastructure: Hands-on experience with a Cloud Computing Service (e.g. AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP)) and Kubernetes (K8s). Understanding of VM-based vs. containerized deployments is essential.
  • Database & Messaging: Proficiency with MySQL, Redis, and message brokers (e.g. GCP Cloud Pub/Sub and RabbitMQ).
  • Architectural Mindset: Deep understanding of software design patterns, specifically Domain-Driven Design, to ensure code is clean, maintainable, and testable.
  • Problem Solving: A proven track record of triaging complex production issues in a distributed system environment.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with LIMS or EHR integrations (HL7, FHIR, etc.).
  • Prior experience in Cybersecurity, specifically implementing controls for SOC2 or ISO 27001.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics tools or clinical diagnostics software.
  • Experience working alongside DevOps teams on CI/CD improvements.
  • Experience with functional programming paradigms.
  • Experience writing documentation for regulatory or compliance.

Personal Qualifications

  • Pragmatic Architect: You care about clean code but understand the need to deliver value to the business.
  • Analytical Thinker: You can look at a third-party API and immediately spot the edge cases and integration risks.
  • Collaborative: You will work closely with the DevOps and IT teams to ensure high-availability and smooth deployments.
  • Comfort with Ambiguity: You can navigate existing systems, document their behavior, and propose paths forward for modernization.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to sit or stand at a computer for extended periods and use monitors and related hardware comfortably.

Benefits

  • Salary range: $121,500-$150,000
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Employer-Sponsored Basic Life/AD&D, Long Term Disability
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Flexible Time Off
  • Stock Option Plan
  • Lunch stipend for days at headquarters
