Job Description
The Director of IT Software Engineering leads the application development organization within the Department of Information Technology, charged with creating high-quality custom-developed internally facing applications, utilizing modern techniques in a hybrid multi-cloud environment. The Director will manage software engineers that develop custom applications and capabilities across multiple customer areas while establishing software engineering best practices, ensuring availability of modern software engineering educational pathways, and leading adoption of robust software development lifecycle practices. The Director also maintains centralized ownership of standards, tooling, and talent development in cooperation with Mayo Clinic's Center for Digital Health. The Director of IT Software Engineering is expected to bring proven experience leading large, complex technical organizations, ideally including an application development organization of 100+ software engineers. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to leverage modern approaches to organizing teams and delivering software, establish and govern development standards, ensure high-quality outcomes, and build and operate an efficient, high-performing organization. This may include direct experience leading software engineering teams or demonstrated success in building, maturing, or overseeing modern engineering capabilities through strong technical leadership. This position reports directly to the Chief Information Officer (CIO).
The Director will leverage a blended model of dedicated engineers and staff augmentation including the use of offshore resources. As an enterprise leader, the Director has a scope of operations that includes Mayo Clinic Rochester, Mayo Clinic Heath System, Mayo Clinic Florida, and Mayo Clinic Arizona. The Director is accountable for ensuring the most effective and efficient application development services, strategies, plans, technologies, processes, standards, and skills, and is responsible for ensuring related services and projects meet or exceed expectations and are delivered on time and on budget. This includes:
• Designing, implementing and continuously improving a core application development capability that leverages modern techniques, automation, and AI to achieve exceptional results.
• Refining and applying Mayo's S-SDLC to ensure that software produced is of the highest quality
• Developing organizational structure and processes to ensure convergence and efficient operations of assigned activities.
• Partnering with physicians and administrative leaders to develop strategies and tactics required to meet organizational objectives.
• Coordinating support activities with business owners, shield leaders, and corresponding administrative functions of IT, Finance, Human Resources, and additional administrative functions.
• Managing operating expenses and capital budgets within the guidelines of the organization's overall goals and objectives.
• Monitoring organizational performance related to such budgets and supports the CIO in assuring the organization operates in a cost-effective manner.
• Carrying out responsibilities assigned by the CIO.
The Director must also have a vision of the future of software engineering at Mayo Clinic. This includes identifying areas AI/Agents can be deployed to boost department performance, building self healing systems that will significantly change the way we support our digital portfolio, and designing in the scalability, performance and lifecycle management of software engineering within the enterprise.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Computer Science, Design, Business, Cybersecurity, Health Informatics). Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in at least one of the following areas: digital health, product development, UX design, enterprise security, or systems operations. Proven experience leading large cross-functional teams and managing enterprise-level initiatives.
Advanced degree (e.g., MS, MBA, MDes, MPH) in a relevant discipline preferred.
