What is a Hippotherapy job?

A hippotherapy job involves using horseback riding as a therapeutic treatment for individuals with physical, emotional, or developmental challenges. Professionals, often occupational, physical, or speech therapists, incorporate horse movement to improve balance, coordination, and muscle strength. They work closely with patients to achieve therapy goals while ensuring safety around the horse. This role requires specialized training and certification to effectively integrate equine movement into therapy sessions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Hippotherapy position, and why are they important?

To thrive in hippotherapy, you need a background as a licensed occupational, physical, or speech therapist, along with specialized training in equine-assisted therapy. Certification from organizations such as the American Hippotherapy Association and experience with horses and adaptive equipment are commonly required. Strong interpersonal, observational, and communication skills help facilitate trust and effective therapy with both clients and equine handlers. These competencies ensure safe, evidence-based therapy that maximizes client progress and well-being in a dynamic environment.

What does a typical day look like for a hippotherapy practitioner?

A typical day for a hippotherapy practitioner involves planning and conducting individualized therapy sessions on horseback, assessing client progress, and collaborating closely with horse handlers and other therapy professionals. Daily tasks often include preparing horses and equipment, documenting session outcomes, and communicating with clients’ families and referring healthcare providers. Practitioners may also participate in regular team meetings to review cases and adjust therapy plans. This role requires adaptability and teamwork, as each client’s needs and responses to therapy can vary widely, making every day unique and rewarding.

Job description

Join Our Team as a Physical Therapist

About Sundance Circle Hippotherapy

At Sundance Circle Hippotherapy, we believe that therapy should be as dynamic, engaging, and alive as the children we serve. We are a specialized pediatric clinic that steps outside the box—and outside the traditional four walls of a clinic. By combining evidence-based clinical physical therapy with the powerful, natural movement of the horse (hippotherapy), we help children achieve profound functional outcomes in a setting they actually look forward to visiting.

Our expansive outdoor environment isn't just a backdrop; it’s an essential therapeutic tool. In this unique setting, kids aren’t just going through the motions of exercises—they are fully engaged, highly motivated, and working more effectively because of everything our vibrant environment has to offer.

Our Culture: Fun, Caring, and Collaborative

We’ve built a workplace culture that is as supportive as it is fun. We are a tight-knit, caring team where ego is left at the gate and everyone genuinely helps each other succeed. Whether you need a second pair of eyes on a complex case or a laugh after a busy day, you will find a community of passionate professionals who have your back.

The Power of Our Partnership

One of the most unique aspects of working with us is our seamless partnership with a dedicated sister non-profit organization. This collaboration changes the game for our therapists and our families:

  • Built-in Support: The non-profit manages the care of our incredible herd and provides a robust network of dedicated volunteers to assist during your sessions, allowing you to focus entirely on clinical care.

  • Bridging the Insurance Gap: Through active fundraising, the non-profit helps cover the "insurance gap" for families who need extra care. Because we don't rely on insurance reimbursements alone, we have the freedom to do more for our patients and focus on what truly matters: clinical excellence and patient progress.

Why You’ll Love It Here

If you are a Physical Therapist who is tired of the standard clinic grind, burnt out by rigid insurance restrictions, and looking to reconnect with the joy of pediatric therapy, Sundance Circle is your sanctuary. Here, you will have the space to breathe, the support to thrive, and the tools to make a life-changing impact.

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement treatment plans for clients
  • Provide skilled physical therapy interventions
  • Collaborate with other therapists and healthcare professionals
  • Conduct assessments and evaluations
  • Create care plans and discharge plans

Required Skills:

  • Manual Therapy
  • Physical Therapy
  • Treatment Planning

Nice to Have Skills: Pediatrics, Horse knowledge and/or experience. Outdoor recreation experience.

Salary Range: $90,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year

DEI Statement:

At Sundance Circle Hippotherapy, we are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our organization. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all individuals, regardless of background or identity.
