Highway Design Expert Witnesses are often called upon to provide testimony and analysis in legal cases involving road design, construction accidents, or traffic safety disputes. Their daily responsibilities include reviewing engineering plans, preparing expert reports, and collaborating with legal teams to clarify technical concepts for non-engineers. They may also conduct site visits and participate in depositions or court hearings. This role requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work under tight deadlines, often balancing multiple cases simultaneously.

What is the difference between Highway Design Expert Witness vs Civil Engineer?

AspectHighway Design Expert WitnessCivil Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, specialized in highway design, often with legal or forensic experienceEngineering degree, licensed professional engineer (PE), broad civil engineering expertise
Work EnvironmentLegal cases, courtrooms, consulting for litigationDesign offices, construction sites, project management
Industry UsageLegal disputes involving highway design, traffic safety, accident reconstructionInfrastructure projects, transportation planning, construction management

While both roles require a civil engineering background, a Highway Design Expert Witness specializes in providing expert testimony in legal cases related to highway design, whereas a Civil Engineer works on the planning, design, and construction of civil infrastructure projects. The expert witness role involves legal communication and forensic analysis, distinct from the broader engineering responsibilities of a civil engineer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Highway Design Expert Witness, and why are they important?

A Highway Design Expert Witness needs deep expertise in civil engineering, highway design standards, and forensic analysis, typically backed by a professional engineering license and considerable field experience. Familiarity with CAD software, roadway design tools, and relevant industry codes is crucial, along with experience preparing technical reports and court testimony. Strong communication, analytical thinking, and impartiality distinguish outstanding expert witnesses in this role. These competencies are vital to providing credible, clear, and authoritative opinions that assist courts in resolving complex highway design disputes.

Position Overview

Are you ready to steer the future of regional infrastructure and move beyond standard design into a high-impact leadership role? We are seeking a Highway Design Project Manager to architect the transportation solutions that connect our communities. In this role, you will not simply manage tasks; you will own the technical delivery and strategic execution of complex roadway projects for DOT and municipal clients, serving as the definitive expert and primary advocate for our clients' visions.

Joining our team means becoming part of a legacy built on technical excellence and a "community-first" mission. We provide an integrated platform where multi-disciplinary collaboration is the standard, not the exception. Here, you will find a culture that invests deeply in your professional trajectory, offering the stability of a half-century-old firm paired with the innovative drive of a modern industry leader. This is your opportunity to build a lasting legacy through projects that define the physical landscape of the region.

Core Responsibilities

  • Strategic Project Stewardship: Lead and manage the entire lifecycle of highway design projects, ensuring that every roadway and bridge solution is delivered with precision, on schedule, and within budget.

  • Multidisciplinary Leadership: Direct and mentor diverse teams of engineers and technical staff, fostering a culture of high performance and technical growth.

  • Client Advocacy: Act as the primary point of contact for DOT and municipal stakeholders, translating complex engineering challenges into clear, actionable project alignments.

  • Technical Excellence & Compliance: Oversee the application of rigorous DOT standards and permitting requirements, ensuring all deliverables meet the highest quality and regulatory benchmarks.

  • Advanced Digital Delivery: Champion the use of Bentley software suites, including MicroStation and OpenRoads, to integrate complex design data into seamless, high-fidelity project models.

  • System Integration: Coordinate across transportation planning, traffic engineering, and construction administration to ensure unified project execution.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.

  • Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.

  • Experience: Minimum 5+ years of dedicated highway design and project management experience.

  • Software Proficiency: Expert command of Bentley software, specifically MicroStation and OpenRoads.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of DOT project delivery processes and standard specifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Regional Expertise: Specific experience managing projects for the Kansas (KDOT) or Oklahoma (ODOT) Departments of Transportation.

  • Advanced Leadership: Proven track record of managing multi-million dollar infrastructure portfolios.

  • Industry Differentiators: Familiarity with emerging regional standards and multi-state licensure.
