This role supervises planned substation maintenance, supports forced outage restoration and troubleshooting, and will help to develop the execution model for a HV/MV technician team, including planning, mobilization, safety expectations, work scope, and day-to-day oversight.
You will oversee safety, work planning, scheduling, quality, documentation, contractor coordination, and cross-functional support to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant operation of site electrical systems.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee planned substation maintenance activities performed by contractors and/or in-house technicians, ensuring safe, high-quality execution and proper documentation.
- Build and lead an in-house HV/MV technician team responsible for selected inspections, testing, repairs, troubleshooting, planned maintenance, corrective maintenance, and forced outage support across renewable sites.
- Recruit, hire, onboard, train, and develop HV/MV technicians while establishing the team structure, qualification expectations, tooling, safety practices, and performance standards required to execute work safely and consistently.
- Manage technician scheduling, callouts, forced outage response, workload balancing, and resource prioritization across projects and operating sites.
- Develop the execution model for transitioning selected MV/HV maintenance scopes from contractor support to in-house performance where safe, cost-effective, and operationally practical.
- Develop technical procedures to support the in-house testing, maintenance, and repair of MV/HV equipment.
- Manage budgets and expenses, ensuring cost-effective use of labor, equipment, contractors, tools, and company resources.
- Provide advanced technical guidance on HV/MV transformers, collection systems, underground cable faults, and substation equipment.
- Review test results, switching plans, LOTO plans, outage coordination activities, and maintenance documentation for quality, completeness, and technical accuracy.
- Ensure strict compliance with safety regulations, including NFPA 70E, OSHA standards, IEEE safety guidelines, and NETA safety procedures, fostering a culture of safety excellence.
- Maintain accurate records for planned and corrective maintenance, including work orders, maintenance logs, test reports, switching activities, open-item tracking, and site reports. Generate clear summaries for Operations, Engineering, Asset Management, Compliance, and other stakeholders.
- Support the Operations Electrical Engineering team with open maintenance items, projects, equipment troubleshooting, and special projects.

- Experience with renewable generation facility HV BOP systems (wind, solar, BESS) or utility grade substation maintenance.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem solving abilities; adaptable to changing priorities and emergent HV issues.
- Proficient in performing advanced electrical testing on transformers (Power Factor, TTR, winding resistance, excitation, and DGA analysis), and medium voltage cable testing (VLF, TDR, fault location)
- Knowledgeable about testing on SF6 and vacuum breakers (insulation resistance, timing, minimum pickup, contact resistance), potential/voltage and current transformers (TTR, excitation, polarity, dielectric withstand, burden tests), air switches, switchgear/switchboards (ATS functionality, breaker testing, torque verification), metering and relaying (event file analysis, basic meter testing), SCADA/control systems (basic networking and subsystem knowledge), and thermography (IR scan surveys and interpretation)
