What is a HEOR Director?

A HEOR Director is a senior leader responsible for overseeing Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) within a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or healthcare organization. Their primary role is to develop and execute strategies that demonstrate the value and effectiveness of medical products through economic modeling, real-world evidence, and patient outcomes research. By collaborating with cross-functional teams, they help ensure that products meet reimbursement and market access requirements. HEOR Directors play a critical role in supporting regulatory submissions, informing pricing decisions, and communicating evidence to stakeholders such as payers and healthcare providers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a HEOR Director?

To thrive as a HEOR (Health Economics and Outcomes Research) Director, you need strong expertise in health economics, outcomes research, epidemiology, and a related advanced degree such as a PhD, PharmD, or MPH. Familiarity with data analytics tools (e.g., SAS, R), modeling software, and HTA submission processes is typically required. Strategic leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and excellent communication skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for generating robust evidence to support market access, inform healthcare decisions, and drive organizational success in a complex regulatory environment.

What are the most common challenges faced by a HEOR Director when managing cross-functional teams?

As a HEOR (Health Economics and Outcomes Research) Director, one of the main challenges is effectively coordinating between diverse teams such as clinical development, market access, regulatory affairs, and commercial teams.
