Bloom Healthcare is a leading provider of primary care, palliative care, and hospice services in the Greater Colorado Area. Our compassionate and dedicated team strives to create a meaningful experience for patients and their families.
Role Overview:
We are seeking compassionate, reliable volunteers to support our After-Hours (AH) 11th Hour Program. These volunteers provide a calming presence for patients who are nearing end of life and offer supportive companionship to families during evenings, nights, weekends, and other after-hours times. This role is focused on vigil support-ensuring that patients and families are not alone during the final stages of life. Due to the nature of after-hours care, volunteers must be comfortable working more independently while maintaining close communication with the on-call hospice team.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide a calm, supportive presence for patients who are actively dying or nearing end of life
  • Offer emotional support and reassurance to family members and loved ones
  • Sit vigil at bedside, ensuring no patient dies alone when possible
  • Communicate any changes, concerns, or needs to the After-Hours On-Call (AOC) nurse
  • Maintain a peaceful, respectful environment in alignment with patient and family wishes
  • Support a comforting atmosphere (quiet presence, conversation if appropriate, reading, music, etc.)
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, boundaries, and patient privacy policies
Important Role Boundaries:
Volunteers in this role provide presence and emotional support only. They do not provide hands-on care. Volunteers may NOT:
- Perform personal care (turning, bathing, toileting, etc.)
- Administer or assist with medications
- Provide medical advice or interpret clinical information • Replace clinical staff responsibilities
Qualifications
- Compassionate, calm, and emotionally grounded demeanor
- Ability to sit with patients and families during end-of-life moments
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow direction
- Comfortable working evenings, nights, weekends, or on short notice
- Ability to maintain composure in emotionally intense situations
- Willingness to follow clear escalation protocols and ask for support when
