What are helical piles?

Helical piles, also known as screw piles, are deep foundation solutions used to support structures in a variety of soil conditions. They consist of steel shafts with helical plates that are screwed into the ground, providing stability for buildings, bridges, and other structures. Helical piles are especially useful in areas with poor soil or where traditional concrete foundations are impractical. They offer quick installation, minimal disturbance to the site, and can be loaded immediately after installation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Helical Pile Installer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Helical Pile Installer, you need knowledge of construction practices, blueprint reading, equipment operation, and a high school diploma or equivalent, often supplemented by on-the-job training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with hydraulic installation equipment and safety protocols, as well as certifications such as OSHA, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and attention to detail are essential soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient installation of foundation systems in various construction environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Helical Pile installers on job sites, and how can they be managed?

Helical Pile installers often encounter challenges such as varying soil conditions, limited site access, and unexpected underground obstructions. Adapting to these variables requires strong problem-solving skills, close communication with geotechnical engineers, and sometimes adjusting equipment or installation methods. Successful installers proactively conduct thorough site assessments, maintain flexibility in their approach, and collaborate closely with the project team to ensure safety and structural integrity. Being prepared for these challenges not only improves project outcomes but also contributes to professional growth in the field.

What is the difference between Helical Pile vs Pile Driver?

AspectHelical PilePile Driver
Primary RoleDesign and installation of helical piles for foundation supportOperating machinery to drive piles into the ground
Required SkillsKnowledge of geotechnical engineering, installation techniquesMechanical operation, equipment handling
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, foundation projectsConstruction sites, pile driving operations
CertificationsOften requires construction safety and equipment operation certificationsHeavy machinery operation licenses

While both roles are involved in foundation construction, a Helical Pile specialist focuses on designing and installing helical piles, whereas a Pile Driver operates machinery to drive piles into the ground. They work closely but have distinct responsibilities within the foundation process.

SLC works on behalf of clients to support utility-scale solar, wind, battery energy storage, thermal power, and other power and infrastructure projects. We evaluate and optimize technical, commercial, environmental, social responsibility, and financial aspects of the projects for a variety of clients.
This position will require you to perform high quality design and consulting services as part of multidisciplined project teams for challenging domestic and international, power and industrial projects. These engineering services include but are not limited to earth retention systems, deep and shallow foundation design, dam stability analyses and inspections, in-situ instrumentation and monitoring programs, subsurface exploration, seismic stability and liquefaction analyses, ground improvement, groundwater supply wells, and field oversight of exploration and construction activities.
Typical responsibilities may include:
  • Prepare geotechnical reports and calculations for conformity with project specifications.
  • Prepare specifications for subsurface investigations, deep foundations, ground improvement, earth retaining systems, monitoring wells, water production wells, and general earthwork.
  • Advise power project developers to support new utility-scale solar, wind, battery energy storage, thermal, and other projects;
  • Evaluate new power and infrastructure projects independently to support financing.
  • Develop technical reports for applicable audiences - including owners, developers, governmental agencies and committees, and financiers
  • Conduct occasional on-site quality surveillance of subsurface exploration programs, pile installation and pile testing.
  • Occasional domestic and/or international travel
