Job Purpose:

The Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Assistant is responsible for supporting and executing assigned components of site EHS programs. Under the direction of the EHS Manager, this role assists in maintaining compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, as well as Kraft Heinz policies and procedures. The EHS Technician provides day-to-day EHS support at the site level, including training coordination, inspections, documentation, and program maintenance. This role also supports broader North America (NA) and Global EHS initiatives, as applicable to the NA Research & Development footprint.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate required and recurring EHS training programs to support site compliance.
  • Assist with incident reporting, investigations, and corrective action tracking.
  • Participate in site safety committees and safety team activities.
  • Support site emergency response drills in coordination with the EHS Manager.
  • Identify safety gaps and partner with the EHS Manager to implement practical solutions in support of a zero-injury workplace.
  • Support environmental compliance activities, including data collection, inspections, and reporting.
  • Assist with environmental documentation, recordkeeping, and annual reviews.
  • Participate in internal environmental and sustainability initiatives, as assigned.
  • Support the implementation and ongoing maintenance of PPE programs and chemical inventory systems.
  • Create, modify, and track online training modules and routine EHS communications.
  • Maintain EHS records, logs, and reports in site systems.
  • Perform annual document reviews in collaboration with the EHS Manager and site stakeholders.
  • Liaise with cross-functional departments to support EHS initiatives.
  • Coordinate with vendors and service providers, as needed.
  • Support EHS projects and initiatives through to completion.
  • Utilize problem-solving and troubleshooting skills to address EHS-related issues.
  • Manage multiple priorities and tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Read, understand, and follow technical documents, including SOPs, LOTO instructions, regulatory requirements, and CFRs.
  • Perform computer-based work and utilize EHS and business systems, as required.

Expected Experience & Required Skills

  • Associate's degree in environmental health and safety (EHS), related field, or high school diploma with 2+ years of relevant manufacturing, pilot plant, or industrial experience.
  • Basic working knowledge of workplace safety procedures, protocols, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience supporting EHS activities such as inspections, audits, training coordination, documentation, or corrective action tracking.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and work under the direction of EHS leadership.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and ability to learn EHS-specific systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with hourly employees, supervisors, and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work safely in industrial or laboratory environments.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting OSHA, ANSI, DOT, and other applicable regulatory standards.
  • EHS-related training or certifications (e.g., OSHA 10/30, First Aid/CPR, HAZWOPER).
  • Familiarity with chemical handling, PPE programs, safety data sheets (SDS), and chemical inventory systems.
  • Experience working in food manufacturing, R&D, pilot plant, or GMP-regulated environments.
  • Basic experience with incident reporting systems, training platforms, or EHS data tracking tools.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Relocation & Sponsorship: This role is based onsite at the [Kraft Heinz Innovation Center in Glenview, Illinois / Heinz Innovation Center in Warrendale, PA. Relocation assistance and work authorization sponsorship are not available for this position.
  • Work hours: Occasional overtime may be required to support project timelines; however, regular overtime is expected to be minimal.
  • Onsite & reliable transportation: This is a fulltime onsite position at the Kraft Heinz R&D Innovation Center in Glenview, IL / Heinz Innovation Center in Warrendale, PA. Reliable attendance and dependable transportation are required. R&D Assistants work on campus Monday through Friday, following a standard daytime schedule to support daily lab operations, sample preparation, equipment setup/readiness, and collaboration with R&D teams. Occasional flexibility may be needed for pilot plant runs or other projectbased activities within standard operational hours.

Physical Requirements Physical demands include but not limited to:

  • Work is performed primarily in an R&D Innovation Center environment, with frequent presence in laboratories, pilot plant areas, and industrial support spaces.
  • Ability to stand and remain upright for extended periods of time during inspections, audits, training observations, and incident response activities.
  • Ability to walk and move frequently throughout the facility, including between laboratories, offices, pilot plant areas, storage locations, and equipment stations.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time while completing documentation, training records, reports, and computer-based work.
  • Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull materials and equipment up to 50 pounds (e.g., salift up to 25 pounds overhead.
  • Frequent use of hfety equipment, containers, monitoring devices, PPE supplies), and occasionally ands for fine motor tasks such as operating monitoring equipment, completing inspections, entering data, handling documents, and using handheld tools or instruments.
  • Frequent repetitive motions, including data entry, equipment handling, and use of inspection tools.
  • Occasional bending, crouching, kneeling, or stooping to access equipment, review conditions at floor level, or retrieve materials from low storage.
  • Occasional reaching below waist level and at or above shoulder height to access safety equipment, signage, chemical containers, or storage areas.
  • Ability to wear and properly utilize required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including but not limited to safety glasses, gloves, lab coats, hearing protection, respiratory protection, and protective footwear, as required by task.
  • Exposure to varying environmental conditions, including noise, odors, temperature variations, cold rooms, warm processing areas, and outdoor conditions during inspections or emergency response.
  • Work may involve proximity to moving mechanical equipment, chemicals, cleaning agents, and laboratory or pilot plant processes.
