DESIGN ENGINEER

WATER RESOURCES / SURFACE WATER SERVICE LINE

POSITION SUMMARY

Spicer Group is seeking a motivated Design Engineer to join our Water Resources / Surface Water Service Line. This position will support engineering projects by assisting with the preparation of design plans, specifications, permit applications, calculations, cost estimates, and supporting project documentation. The Design Engineer will apply standard engineering practices and techniques while developing professional knowledge in hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, surface water design, and related project delivery. This role may also utilize software such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SWMM, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and ArcGIS to support studies, modeling, drafting, and project design efforts. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, eager to learn, and able to work collaboratively with engineers, technicians, and project teams to deliver quality solutions for clients.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform assignments designed to develop professional knowledge and abilities requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks

  • Limited exercise of judgment is required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives

  • Using prescribed methods, performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer

  • Applies standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjusts and correlates data, recognizes discrepancies in results and follows operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes

  • Assists in the preparation of design plans, specifications, supporting documents, and permit applications for projects

  • Assists in the preparation of calculations, quantities, cost estimates and other supporting documentation for projects

  • Assists in the preparation of hydrologic and hydraulic calculations

  • Utilizes computer software to analyze hydrologic and hydraulic studies, including, but not limited to, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, and SWMM

  • May perform plan drafting using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and ArcGIS software

  • May direct and review the work of Technicians

  • May serve as an onsite project representative on a construction site

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field

  • Familiarity with basic engineering principles, codes, and standards

  • Ability to perform basic engineering calculations under supervision

  • Basic understanding of project documentation and deliverables

  • Strong willingness to learn and accept feedback

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 0 to 3 years of experience working in an engineering field

  • Ability to obtain Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification

  • Proficient in engineering, design, modeling, and analysis tools

  • Ability to prepare drawings, specs, and calculations with minimal supervision

  • Capable of coordinating with drafters, other engineers, and consultants to produce quality deliverables

  • Ability to independently handle small design tasks or portions of large projects

  • Ability to effectively lead and direct a team of technicians and/or designers

  • Experience using HEC-RAS, and SWMM modeling software

  • Experience using ArcGIS/ArcGIS Pro software
