What does a healthcare software engineering manager do?

A Healthcare Software Engineering Manager oversees teams that design, develop, and maintain software systems used in the healthcare industry. Their responsibilities include managing software engineers, ensuring that projects meet healthcare regulations and standards, and collaborating with stakeholders such as clinicians and IT professionals. They help translate healthcare needs into technical solutions, prioritize tasks, and ensure the delivery of high-quality, compliant software products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a healthcare software engineering manager?

To thrive as a Healthcare Software Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in software engineering, experience with healthcare IT standards (like HL7 or FHIR), and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with project management tools, EHR systems, and compliance frameworks such as HIPAA is typically required, along with certifications like PMP or CSM being advantageous. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help motivate teams and manage cross-functional collaboration. These competencies are essential for delivering secure, effective healthcare solutions that meet regulatory standards and improve patient outcomes.

What are some common challenges healthcare software engineering managers face when balancing regulatory compliance with rapid software development?

Healthcare Software Engineering Managers often navigate the complex challenge of delivering innovative software solutions quickly while ensuring strict adherence to healthcare regulations like HIPAA or GDPR. Balancing these requirements means teams must implement robust security and privacy controls early in the development process, which can slow down traditional agile cycles. Effective managers foster close collaboration between engineers, compliance officers, and quality assurance specialists to streamline audits and documentation, helping to maintain both speed and compliance. This careful coordination is essential for producing high-quality, compliant healthcare software without sacrificing product timelines.

Job description

At 5411 Hub, we specialize in Headhunting, Executive Search, and Recruiting across the U.S. and LATAM, helping companies attract high-impact talent for technology, commercial, strategic, and leadership roles.

We are currently looking for a Software Engineering Manager for an important company in the Healthcare industry, with a strong technology-driven environment and operations in the United States.

This role is ideal for an experienced engineering leader who combines strong technical judgment, people leadership, product mindset, and the ability to build scalable and reliable software in a regulated environment.

The Role

The Software Engineering Manager will lead and develop a team of software engineers while partnering closely with Product, Architecture, QA, Data, DevOps, and business stakeholders.

The position requires someone who can balance people management and technical leadership, drive engineering best practices, and ensure that software solutions are secure, scalable, resilient, and aligned with business priorities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing software engineering team.
  • Own engineering delivery, quality, and execution across assigned products and platforms.
  • Partner with Product and business leaders to translate business needs into technical solutions.
  • Participate in architecture and technical design decisions.
  • Improve engineering standards around scalability, reliability, security, performance, and maintainability.
  • Establish and strengthen development practices including:
    • CI/CD
    • automated testing
    • code reviews
    • observability
    • secure software development
  • Identify technical risks and proactively address architectural or delivery issues.
  • Manage engineering priorities, capacity, and technical debt.
  • Support recruiting, onboarding, career development, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Promote the responsible adoption of AI-assisted engineering tools and automation.
  • Collaborate effectively within a distributed and remote organization.
What We’re Looking For
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • 2+ years leading or managing software engineers.
  • Strong background building enterprise or SaaS applications.
  • Solid understanding of modern software architecture, APIs, cloud environments, distributed systems, and databases.
  • Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD, DevOps practices, automated testing, and software quality.
  • Strong ability to mentor senior engineers and influence technical decisions.
  • Experience managing remote or distributed teams.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
Highly Valued
  • Previous experience in Healthcare, HealthTech, Healthcare SaaS, Payer, Provider, Digital Health, or regulated industries.
  • Experience working with sensitive or regulated data.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and healthcare data-security considerations.
  • Cloud-native architecture.
  • Microservices and APIs.
  • Data platforms and AI-enabled products.
  • Experience modernizing legacy applications.
  • Security and compliance-oriented engineering practices.
Working Model
  • Full-time
  • Remote — United States
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Occasional travel or in-person meetings may be required depending on business needs.
Compensation — Recommended Market Range

For a Software Engineering Manager in Miami, current market data puts average base salary around $148,500, although senior positions can move substantially higher.

For comparison, current remote Healthcare/HealthTech roles show:

  • HealthEquity: approximately $127K–$165.5K base, plus incentive, RSUs, medical/dental/vision, PTO and 401(k) match.
  • Synapse Health: approximately $165.6K–$205K base, with health insurance, 401(k) match and PTO.
  • HealthEdge: approximately $187K–$202K base for a remote Engineering Manager in healthcare technology.
  • Ensemble Health Partners: approximately $150K–$220K for a remote Senior Manager, Software Engineering.

Levels.fyi currently places median total compensation for Software Engineering Managers in Miami at approximately $187K, although this includes bonus/equity and varies significantly by company.

Recommended range for this search

For a solid Healthcare company looking for a strong Engineering Manager rather than a Director-level profile, I would recommend publishing:

  • Annual performance bonus: 10–20%
  • Medical, dental and vision insurance
  • 401(k), ideally with company match
  • PTO: ideally 20+ days or flexible PTO
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Remote-work flexibility

That would put expected cash compensation around $176K–$228K, depending on base and bonus.

For a particularly strong profile with Healthcare + Cloud + Architecture + People Management, I would allow flexibility up to approximately $200K base.

Why Join
  • Lead engineering in a technology-driven Healthcare environment.
  • Influence architecture, engineering standards, and product evolution.
  • Build and develop high-performing engineering teams.
  • Work remotely while remaining connected to the Miami / South Florida technology ecosystem.
  • Participate in technology initiatives with meaningful impact on healthcare operations and user experience.
  • Join an organization where engineering leadership has direct visibility and influence.

Engineering Leader + Strong Technical Foundation + People Development + Cloud/SaaS + Healthcare or Regulated Environment
