Health Research Assistant information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Health Research Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Health Research Assistant, you need a background in health sciences or a related field, strong analytical skills, and experience with research methodologies. Familiarity with statistical software (such as SPSS or R), data collection tools, and compliance with research ethics and protocols is typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and strong organizational skills help you excel in collaborating with research teams and managing complex data. These abilities ensure research integrity, accurate data analysis, and effective project support, which are vital for successful health research outcomes.

What is the difference between Health Research Assistant vs Clinical Research Coordinator?

AspectHealth Research AssistantClinical Research Coordinator

The roles often overlap but differ in scope and responsibilities within the research process.

What does a Health Research Assistant do?

A Health Research Assistant supports scientists and medical professionals in conducting health-related research studies. Their responsibilities often include collecting and analyzing data, recruiting and interviewing study participants, maintaining accurate records, and assisting with the preparation of reports or publications. They may also help ensure that studies comply with ethical standards and regulatory requirements. Health Research Assistants play a vital role in advancing medical knowledge and improving public health outcomes.

What are some typical challenges Health Research Assistants face when managing multiple research projects simultaneously?

Health Research Assistants often juggle several research studies at once, each with its own timelines and requirements. A common challenge is prioritizing tasks such as data collection, literature reviews, and regulatory paperwork, all while maintaining accuracy and compliance. Effective time management and clear communication with principal investigators and team members are crucial to ensure all deadlines are met and data integrity is maintained. Developing strong organizational systems and regularly checking in with supervisors can help mitigate these challenges.

The Cognition, Emotion, and Life Experiences Lab (part of the Psychosocial Research Program) at Butler Hospital is seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates for a full-time research assistant (RA) position to work on projects led by Principal Investigators Michael Armey, PhD, Chris Hughes, PhD, Heather Schatten, PhD, and Gemma Wallace, PhD. This role involves working on studies focused on predicting and intervening on suicidal thoughts and behaviors in daily life and during high-risk time periods. Current grant-funded studies involve behavioral and physiological assessments, smartphone and wearable device technology (e.g., biosensors, smartwatches), and technology-based treatment development and implementation for suicide in psychiatric hospital settings. This position would be a good fit for individuals wishing to pursue graduate or medical school in the future. We are considering applicants who can start immediately through July 2026.
Butler Hospital is a Brown University-affiliated psychiatric hospital located in Providence, RI. Butler Hospital is one of the earliest psychiatric facilities established in the United States. The Psychosocial Research Program is one of several active research groups at Butler Hospital. Dr. Ivan Miller is the director, and the program is comprised of academic psychologists, post-doctoral fellows, research assistants, master's-level interventionists, and project coordinators. Research in this group is currently funded by numerous NIH and other grants, and primarily centers on suicide prevention, post-hospital transitions, technology-assisted assessment and intervention, mood and psychotic disorders, and comorbid conditions (substance use disorders and physical health problems) conducted in a variety of clinical settings.
