What is a health policy internship?

A health policy internship is a temporary position—often for students or recent graduates—where interns gain hands-on experience working with organizations involved in shaping, analyzing, or implementing health policy. Interns may assist with policy research, data analysis, advocacy efforts, and administrative tasks related to healthcare legislation, public health initiatives, or governmental programs. This role provides valuable exposure to how health policies are developed, evaluated, and communicated, and is ideal for those interested in public health, law, or government. Interns often work in settings such as government agencies, think tanks, advocacy organizations, or healthcare associations.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a health policy internship?

As a Health Policy Intern, you can expect to engage in a variety of tasks such as conducting research on current health policy issues, assisting with policy analysis, and helping to draft briefs or reports. Interns often support team meetings, track relevant legislative developments, and may help organize events or stakeholder meetings. Collaboration with policy analysts, researchers, and advocacy teams is common, providing a well-rounded experience in the field. This role offers valuable exposure to the policymaking process and opportunities to develop professional skills relevant to a career in health policy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a health policy intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Health Policy Intern, you need a solid background in public health, policy analysis, and research, often supported by relevant coursework or a degree in public health, political science, or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools like Excel or Stata, as well as experience with literature reviews and policy databases, is highly valuable. Strong communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills help interns synthesize complex information and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are crucial for effectively supporting policy initiatives, conducting impactful research, and contributing to informed decision-making in health policy environments.
