Job description

Overview

The Health Information Management Specialist reports to the Health Information Manager at Central Health. This position is responsible for the HIM activities, such as auditing, indexing, scanning, and organizing documents accurately for proper closure and notification to Central Health Providers, organizing and managing the clinics incoming electronic faxes. Request medical records from outside entities for continuation of care, retrieving Protected Health Information (PHI) from PACs system that hold diagnostics and external electronic medical records (EMRs) that hold records for procedures or results ordered by Central Health Providers, document and release all Central Health PHI as Record Custodians for the organization. This position will also audit medical records for Central Health for completeness and accuracy to ensure appropriate documentation is available for the Revenue Cycle Department. Health Information Management Specialist will also manage designated HIM Work queues in the EMR, complete and approve all demographical changes that are made within the EMR, merge all duplicate medical records that are identified, and add appropriate chart flags or comments as needed to ensure integrity of the medical record. Health Information Management Specialist will manage and resolve chart corrections that are submitted to the HIM Department. In addition, the Health Information Specialist will participate and complete any HIM Department projects and task as assigned. This position will work at least 50% of their hours on site in the Navigation Center.

Responsibilities
  • Audit, Prepare, index, scan, and upload batches of medical records accurately with correct Document Type and Document Group, for proper order closure and notification to Central Health Providers.
  • Manage assigned Workqueues for HIM, Release of Information, Scanning, Duplicate Records, Overlays and other HIM functions.
  • Manage, document and process all request and inquiries for patient health information, in accordance with HIPAA guidelines by obtaining proper authorizations.
  • Correct and manage errors within the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Retrieve PHI from PACs system that hold diagnostics and external EMRs that hold records for procedures or results ordered by Central Health Providers. Request medical records from external health care providers for continuation of care.
  • Manage and organize the organizations incoming electronic faxes.
  • Audit the Medical Records for Central Health Patients to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Maintain the Integrity of Central Healths medical record, by auditing and merging any identified duplicate records or patient demographic changes that can cause a duplicate.
  • Ensures to follow and adhere to Health Information Management policies and procedures for Central Health.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all federal and state guidelines and regulations.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to all patients and staff.
  • Adhere to assigned work schedule and meet or exceeds identified HIM metrics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)

PREFERRED EDUCATION: Associate Degree

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 3 year of Experience in a healthcare setting. 5 year of previous experience in a clerical or data entry environment.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 1 year Experience in a Health Information Management department 

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician
