Principal Clinical Informaticist Specialist (Laboratory)
Position Summary
The Principal Clinical Informaticist Specialist is a senior-level expert in clinical informatics, bridging the gap between clinical practice and information technology. This role leads the design, implementation, optimization, and evaluation of health information systems to support high-quality, evidence-based, and efficient patient care. The position provides strategic guidance to leadership teams, clinical stakeholders, and executive leadership, ensuring alignment between technology initiatives and clinical goals.
Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain knowledge of ITLM and ITSM principles including change control.
  • Develop and promote the strategic vision for clinical informatics within the organization.
  • Lead complex informatics initiatives that improve clinical workflows, patient outcomes, and operational efficiency.
  • Able to organize workflows and present solutions to appropriate committees for approval/review.
  • Serve as a liaison between clinicians, IT teams, and leadership to ensure alignment between technology solutions and clinical needs.
  • Drive the development and implementation of clinical decision support systems (CDSS), electronic health records (EHR), and population health tools.
  • Conduct advanced workflow analysis and redesign to enhance efficiency and effectiveness using technology solutions.
  • Oversee implementation and optimization of Cerner Millennium and related systems, including PathNet for laboratory workflows.
  • Demonstrates history of developing and maintaining test scripts applicable to the software systems and IT Change Control.
  • Perform advanced data analysis and create dashboards to monitor performance metrics and support decision-making.
  • Champion change management, user training, and adoption strategies across clinical departments.
  • Mentor and support lower-level colleagues and clinical champions regarding appropriate use of the clinical software systems.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations (HIPAA, Joint Commission) and organizational policies.
Required Skills & Competencies
  • Expert-level knowledge of clinical workflow redesign and user adoption strategies.
  • Knowledge of healthcare data models and ontologies including but not limited ICD10, CPT, SNOMED, LOINC, etc.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Visio.
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into lay terms for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated leadership in change management and strategic planning.
Education & Certification
  • Master's degree or higher required (Health Informatics or related field preferred).
  • Active clinical license (RN, LPN, RT, NP, PA, MD, DO, or equivalent).
  • Health Informatics Certification required; CPHIMS or other advanced certifications preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 10 years in health informatics or clinical healthcare roles.
  • Extensive experience with workflow design, process improvement, and EHR optimization.
  • Cerner Millennium experience required; PathNet experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven track record in laboratory workflows and integration of lab systems into enterprise EHR platforms.
  • Has or obtains advanced knowledge/certifications in appropriate areas of Oracle Cerner and associated applications
