High School Head Basketball Coach
Seasonal Position | Part-Time
Position Summary
Marion P. Thomas Charter School seeks an experienced, energetic, and student-centered Head Basketball Coach to lead its high school basketball program. The Head Coach is responsible for developing a competitive program that emphasizes academic success, character, leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship, and athletic excellence. The coach will create a positive culture that supports student-athlete development while ensuring compliance with all school, conference, and New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) rules and regulations.
Employment Status
Part-Time, Seasonal Employee
Conditions of Employment
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required pre-employment screenings and satisfaction of all NJDOE, NJSIAA, and Marion P. Thomas Charter School coaching eligibility requirements.
Compensation
Compensation will be based upon qualifications and experience. This position is not eligible for employee benefits.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma required; associate's or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Eligible to serve as a high school athletic coach in the State of New Jersey.
  • Possess all coaching credentials required under New Jersey law and NJSIAA regulations prior to the start of employment.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications or the ability to obtain them before the first official practice.
  • Successful criminal history background check and all pre-employment requirements.
  • Previous basketball coaching or collegiate playing experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basketball fundamentals, strategy, player development, conditioning, and game management.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, staff, officials, and community members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, and supervise all aspects of the high school basketball program.
  • Conduct safe, organized, and effective practices that develop fundamental skills and teamwork.
  • Prepare athletes physically, mentally, and emotionally for competition.
  • Develop offensive and defensive strategies appropriate to the team's strengths.
  • Establish clear expectations for conduct, attendance, academic performance, and sportsmanship.
  • Monitor student-athlete eligibility in accordance with school and NJSIAA requirements.
  • Supervise assistant coaches and coordinate coaching responsibilities.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful team culture.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, student-athletes, and school administration.
  • Ensure appropriate supervision of student-athletes during practices, games, travel, and team activities.
  • Maintain equipment, uniforms, and inventory assigned to the program.
  • Assist with scheduling, transportation coordination, fundraising (when approved), and program promotion.
  • Attend coaches' meetings, professional development, and athletic department meetings as required.
  • Comply with all Board policies, school procedures, conference rules, NJSIAA regulations, and applicable federal and state laws.
  • Perform other duties related to the athletic program as assigned by the Athletic Director or Principal.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to demonstrate athletic skills and techniques.
  • Ability to stand, walk, run, bend, lift, and supervise activities for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move athletic equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in gymnasiums, athletic facilities, schools, and at off-site competition venues. Evening, weekend, holiday, and travel commitments are required throughout the basketball season.
