Job description
Position Overview:
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Credit Policy & Product Strategist - Director to join our Single-Family Acquisitions organization. The ideal candidate will leverage deep expertise in mortgage products and underwriting along with credit policy to identify opportunities within our current requirements and propose innovative, execution-ready solutions. This role requires a strategic thinker who can advocate for changes that enhance our credit policy and product framework, ensuring it aligns with Freddie Mac's goals of accessibility and sustainability in the housing market.
Our Impact:
The Borrower Strategy team plays a critical role by focusing on innovative approaches to improve borrower experiences and outcomes, enhancing affordability and accessibility of homeownership solutions in today's dynamic housing environment through responsible product design and clear, consistent underwriting guidance.
Your Impact:
As a Credit Strategist in the Single-Family Division, you will significantly impact Freddie Mac's mission by driving strategic enhancements to credit policies that align with the organization's goals of improving accessibility and sustainability in the housing market, fostering better borrower experiences, and advancing homeownership solutions. Your role will be pivotal in advocating and implementing innovative credit and product strategies that reduce friction, streamline operations, and improve risk management.
Credit Policy & Product Review and Analysis:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of existing credit policies, underwriting requirements, and mortgage product eligibility/terms within the Single-Family Acquisitions Division.
- Analyze data, loan performance, QC findings, and market trends to identify inefficiencies and opportunities to improve product execution, borrower outcomes, and risk performance.
Strategy & Solution Development (Policy + Product):
- Propose targeted solutions or revisions to credit policy and product requirements aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, Seller execution, and risk management.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and refine credit and product strategies (e.g., eligibility, documentation, layered risk treatment, product features) that improve overall performance.
Collaboration and Engagement:
- Work closely with Quality Control, Seller Engagement, Credit Risk Management, Legal/Compliance, Operations, and other relevant departments, as well as external stakeholders (Sellers, mortgage industry groups, etc.) to ensure alignment of credit policy and product strategy with broader organizational goals.
Performance Monitoring:
- Partner with Credit Risk Management to define and monitor performance metrics that evaluate the effectiveness of implemented credit policy and product strategies (e.g., defect trends, repurchase drivers, early performance, layered risk indicators, Seller execution impacts).
- Recommend adjustments based on observed outcomes, operational feedback, and changing market conditions.
Industry Leadership:
- Collaborate with Seller Engagement and Credit Risk Management to proactively engage with Sellers through Freddie Mac forums including Seller Advisory Councils, Credit Advisory Board, on-site Seller visits, and industry events/conferences.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices related to mortgage product design, underwriting, and credit policy.
- Represent Freddie Mac at industry events and forums, sharing insights and engaging with peers in the housing finance space.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field; Master's degree preferred
- 12+ years of relevant experience in mortgage credit policy, product strategy/management, underwriting, or acquisition credit risk within the Single-Family mortgage industry
- Preferred: prior primary market experience (e.g., independent mortgage bank and/or financial institution) supporting mortgage products and underwriting
- Strong knowledge of mortgage products, underwriting standards, credit risk assessment, and regulatory requirements in the housing finance sector.
- Proven analytical skills with the ability to consume data to extract actionable insights and strategies
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with demonstrated ability to engage diverse partners effectively
- Strategic mindset with a track record of driving change and innovation in credit policy and/or mortgage product practices
- Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously
Keys to Success in this Role:
- Expertise in Credit Policy and Underwriting
- Strategic thinking and innovative mindset
- Data-driven and analytical
