POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Early Head Start Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Education Support Staff

REPORTS TO: Early Head Start Teacher

Non-Exempt

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Responsible for assisting the Early Head Start Teacher with instructional activities.


JOB GOAL:

Under the general supervision of the Early Head Start Teacher, functions as primary teacher to four assigned children six weeks to three years of age; promote each child’s growth and development by planning and implementing developmentally appropriate experience; create an environment in which children can develop personal relationships, make choices, solve problems, and develop age appropriate social and self-help skills. Work to maintain a clean, safe and orderly physical center environment.


KEY ROLE:

Leadership:

1. Assistant to the Early Head Start Teacher.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Participates in daily and long-range lesson and classroom activity planning.
  2. Conducts learning exercises with small group of children.
  3. Guides children in working and playing harmoniously with other children.
  4. Alerts the Early Head Start Teacher to special needs of individual children.
  5. Provides escort and assistance to children as necessary.
  6. Helps maintain individual records for each child.
  7. Fosters good eating habits and table manners in children.
  8. Assists the Early Head Start Teacher in maintaining neat work areas.
  9. Assists with the supervision of children during regular play periods.
  10. Collects and displays suitable material for educational displays.
  11. Assists with the supervision of children during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and field trips.
  12. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about children as is expected of Early Head Start Teacher.
  13. Conforms to dress regulations of the agency.
  14. Seeks in-kind contributions.
  15. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as requested by the Early Head Start Teacher.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Maintains close, daily contact with children, Early Head Start Teacher and parents.

External: Maintains contact with external community groups, schools, parents and others to assist in resolving problems and to publicize Kids Central.


Requirements:

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Must meet one of the following Head Start education requirements:
  • A current national infant and toddler center-based CDA credential issued by the Council for Professional Recognition
  • A comparable certificate or credential that meets or exceeds the national infant and toddler center-based CDA credential requirements***
  • A degree in child development or early childhood education (ECE) as well as training or coursework with a focus on infant and toddler development
  • A degree in a related field as well as training or coursework with a focus on infant and toddler development
  • ***A comparable credential is issued by state, territory and tribal agencies, boards, and commissions as well as accredited colleges and universities or other early childhood organizations that offer certificate or degree programs.
  • Understands social and economic background and developmental need of children and families.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of overall Head Start goals and philosophy.
  • Demonstrates understanding of principles and functions of leadership and management.
  • Exhibits effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of computer and technology.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: The position requires movement, travel, light lifting, work on a computer station, and other standard job requirements. All duties of this position are within the bounds and requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
