As a Senior Staff Data Engineer you will be part of the data engineering community which includes integration platforms, software engineering, and visual insights. We use our data infrastructure to power analytics and data products and to deliver relevant experiences in real-time. We enable our company to validate strategic decisions, make smarter choices, and react to the fast-changing world of healthcare. Works closely with other HCA ITG Architects and Engineers to ensure enterprise technical standards are maintained and our integration platforms continue to deliver data as expected. Formulates and defines system scope and objectives through research and fact-finding to develop or modify moderately complex information systems. Pairs with analysts to create and implement detailed specifications. Designs, codes, tests, debugs, documents, and maintains those programs. Competent to work on all phases of applications systems analysis and programming activities. Provides guidance to other staff members through all phases of project.

Major Responsibilities:

DECISION MAKING

• Meets with customer peers, and vendors regularly to define and resolve product or project problems and issues

• Analyzes business requirements, develops and evaluates alternatives, prepares approaches for complex programming systems or applications

• Design and create real-time data pipelines that accelerate the time from idea to insight.

• Define and document data engineering best practices, processes, and standards. Support teams in upholding these standards and evolve and update the standards as technology changes.

• Produce high-quality, modular, reusable code that incorporates best practices and serves as an example for less experienced engineers.

• Promote and support data security best practices that align with industry standards and regulatory and legal requirements.

• Participate in all systems software buy or build decisions

• Contributes to development of strategy and architecture

• Provides technical advice to management recommending approaches and solutions to complex problems

ANALYTICAL & CREATIVE

• Analyzes objectives, solves problems, and develops requirements and proposals for programming systems. These activities require sophisticated business and technical expertise, and extensive programming systems.

• Implement automated workflows that lower manual/operational costs, define and uphold SLAs for timely delivery of data, and move the company closer to democratizing data.

• Enable self-service data architecture supporting query exploration, dashboards, data catalog, and rich data discovery.

• Lead data analysis efforts and solution proposals to data-related and data architecture problems.

• Lead implementation of unit and integration tests and promote and conduct performance testing where appropriate

• Work may result in publication of technical papers

• Keeps technically current with changes and improvements within area of assignment or specialization, incorporating them where applicable

• Contributes to the development of new programming / analysis concepts and improvements of existing technique

RELATIONSHIPS

• Build productive and healthy relationships within the department and other teams to foster growth of our culture, our people, and our platforms.

• Work with data engineers, data architects, data scientists, and other internal stakeholders to understand product requirements and then design, build, and monitor data platforms and pipelines that meet today's requirements but can gracefully scale.

• Work closely with all business units and engineering teams to develop the strategy and roadmap for long term data platform architecture.

• Represents company at technical conferences

• Must be able to understand the requirements of multiple departments, identify and negotiate tradeoffs to gain management agreement with proposed recommendations

• Regularly participate in vendor discussions

• Mentor team members on complex data projects, estimating their work, and following the Agile process.

• Mentoring and guiding junior engineers in developing onboarding and training plans to level up the team.

• Working with Product Management to develop and communicate product roadmaps based on the business needs and value delivered.

Education & Experience:

•  Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field preferred

• 7+ years of experience in a software engineering, data engineering, or related roles required 

• Demonstrated professional experience with Elixir, Erlang VM, required

• Experience with Phoenix LiveView, HTML/CSS, SQL and NoSQL Database and UNIX operating system preferred

Licenses, Certifications, & Training:

•  Google Cloud Certified Professional Data Engineer preferred 

•  Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer or AWS Certified Data Analytics  

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Behaviors:

• Demonstrates an empathetic and growth mindset with a willingness to learn new skills, technologies, and methodologies required

• Strong knowledge of best practices and design patterns used in creating, automating, and supporting data pipelines required

• Strong ability to create and use analytical tools to monitor data pipeline metrics and provide actionable intelligence to increase operational efficiency and valuable data outcomes required 

• Strong ability to present and facilitate technical ideas while creating alignment among audience of varying disciplines required 

• Expert ability using source control management tools such as Git/GitHub required 

• Expert ability using CI/CD automation tools required 

• Knowledge of healthcare integration standards such as HL7 and FHIR preferred 

• Strong understanding of Agile methodologies and how to apply Agile within the team required 

• Helps coach and mentor junior team members and others external to the team required 

• Proven ability to complete work, make sound decisions, and plan and accomplish goals without explicit direction/guidance from leadership required 

• Builds and nurtures healthy relationships with all colleagues required
