What is a harness engineer?

Harness engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain wiring harness systems used to connect electrical and electronic components in vehicles, machinery, or equipment. They are responsible for creating detailed schematics, selecting appropriate materials, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. Harness engineers work closely with other engineering teams to ensure the wiring harnesses meet the specific functional and environmental requirements of the product. Their work is crucial in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and industrial manufacturing.

What are some typical challenges a harness engineer faces when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Harness Engineers often work closely with design, manufacturing, and testing teams to ensure wiring systems are integrated seamlessly into complex products. A common challenge is managing communication between departments, as design changes can impact harness routing or specifications. Additionally, ensuring that harness designs meet both electrical and mechanical requirements while adhering to tight project timelines can be demanding. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are crucial for navigating these challenges and delivering effective solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a harness engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Harness Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, experience with wire harness design, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software (such as CATIA or AutoCAD), wiring diagram tools, and industry standards like IPC/WHMA-A-620 is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure reliable, safe, and compliant harness designs critical for performance in industries like automotive and aerospace.

What is the difference between Harness Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

What Is the Opportunity?
As a member of the Enterprise AI and Emerging Technology organization at Travelers, you'll be joining a strategic and collaborative team focused on transforming our business and technology capabilities leveraging best in class AI-enabled technology. We're looking for a Software Engineer I in the Enterprise AI Platforms organization to join our team focused on delivering agent harnesses and platform capabilities that enable and accelerate the development of AI applications across the enterprise.
• Will deliver harness capabilities that other engineering teams build on, including orchestration, tool integration, context management, and the guardrails around them.
• Engineers at this level work across the full architecture of product delivery from requirements gathering to maintenance and enhancement of existing systems.
• Will contribute to architecture and solution design in partnership with engineering, architecture, and product, and build SME-level depth in the technologies they own.
• This role is for engineers who take full ownership of what they develop and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

What Will You Do?

  • Build and operate agent harness capabilities consumed by engineering teams across the enterprise, working within the team's technical direction.
  • Integrate agents with tools, APIs, and enterprise systems, and make those integrations reliable under real load.
  • Advance test automation and deliver code against non-functional requirements: secure, observable, scalable, recoverable, financially responsible.
  • Contribute to application and solution design in partnership with architects, product owners, and consuming teams.
  • Own your assets end to end, including currency, vulnerability management, and production readiness.
  • Document your work so others can build on it, and actively deepen your expertise in the technologies you own.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of hands-on software development experience, including code you have shipped and supported in production.
  • Proficiency in Python, with exposure to TypeScript for AI integration work.
  • Hands-on experience building generative AI or agentic applications.
  • Experience using agentic coding tools, with an informed point of view on where they help and where they fall short.
  • Familiarity with the components of an agent harness: orchestration loops, tool interfaces, context and memory management, and guardrails.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS and/or Azure cloud services.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration tools, including Kubernetes.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD tooling such as GitHub Actions or Jenkins.
  • SME-level depth in at least one technical discipline, and the appetite to build more.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including with partners outside engineering.
  • Agentic runtimes and harness platforms such as AWS AgentCore experience.
  • OSS agent frameworks such as Strands Agents or LangGraph experience.
  • Terraform, CDK, or an equivalent for provisioning cloud infrastructure experience.
  • Helm for Kubernetes application deployment experience.
  • Observability tooling and distributed tracing in production environments experience.

What is a Must Have?

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
  • 2 additional years of software engineering experience.
