The Baillie Group is seeking an experienced and motivated Operations Manager to lead the day-to-day Hardwood Procurement Activities for the Baillie Group based out of Central Pennsylvania. As one of North America's leading hardwood lumber manufacturers and suppliers, The Baillie Group operates a network of sawmills, concentration yards, and log procurement operations throughout the eastern United States. Position Summary
The Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of hardwood log yard operations, including log receiving, inventory management, equipment utilization, employee supervision, safety compliance, and operational efficiency. This individual will work closely with procurement, sales, transportation, and mill operations to ensure logs are processed, sorted, and shipped effectively to maximize value while also supporting daily manufacturing operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage daily log yard operations to ensure safe and efficient workflow
  • Supervise, train, and develop log yard employees and equipment operators
  • Monitor log inventory levels, species mix, and yard organization
  • Coordinate inbound and outbound log transportation activities
  • Ensure equipment and facility maintenance schedules are followed
  • Monitor productivity and implement process improvements to maximize efficiency
  • Enforce company safety policies and maintain a strong safety culture
  • Conduct regular inspections of equipment, yard conditions, and operating procedures
  • Collaborate with log procurement and mill management teams to support production goals
  • Track operational metrics and prepare reports as needed
  • Assist with budgeting, cost control initiatives, and operational planning
  • Maintain compliance with environmental, safety, and regulatory requirements

Qualifications
  • 3+ years of management or supervisory experience in forestry, logging, lumber, manufacturing, or industrial operations preferred
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills
  • Experience managing equipment, inventory, and operational processes
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and operational software systems
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of hardwood logs, log grading, forestry, or lumber manufacturing
  • Valid driver's license required

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain throughout the log yard
  • Ability to climb equipment and inspect operational areas
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
