The Store Manager should keep ownership informed while handling daily operations with sound judgment and dependable follow-through.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership and Development

  • Recruit, hire, onboard, and train employees in partnership with ownership.
  • Coach and develop assistant managers, department leaders, and associates.
  • Set clear expectations, provide regular feedback, and address performance concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Create schedules that balance customer service, workload, and labor budgets.
  • Build a team culture centered on helpfulness, accountability, teamwork, and respect.

Customer Service and Sales

  • Ensure customers receive friendly, knowledgeable assistance throughout the store.
  • Resolve customer concerns fairly and professionally.
  • Train employees to understand products, identify customer needs, and recommend complete solutions.
  • Support promotions, seasonal events, and department initiatives that increase sales and customer loyalty.

Store Operations and Merchandising

  • Oversee daily opening, closing, cash handling, security, and operating procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, organized, and inviting store, including the garden center and exterior displays.
  • Ensure shelves are stocked, pricing is accurate, and displays are attractive and maintained.
  • Plan and execute seasonal transitions, promotional displays, and merchandising changes.
  • Coordinate receiving, stocking, and daily task assignments so work is completed accurately and on time.
  • Identify maintenance and equipment needs and coordinate follow-up with ownership.

Inventory and Financial Performance

  • Maintain inventory accuracy through consistent receiving procedures, inventory counts, and follow-up on discrepancies.
  • Monitor out-of-stocks, damaged merchandise, slow-moving products, and inventory loss.
  • Review sales, gross margin, labor costs, and other performance measures with ownership.
  • Identify problems, recommend improvements, and follow through on action plans.
  • Manage expenses within approved budgets and purchasing guidelines.
Qualifications
  • Previous retail management experience, including responsibility for employees and daily store operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, coach, delegate, and hold a team accountable.
  • Strong customer service, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to understand sales reports, labor budgets, gross margin, and inventory performance.
  • Comfortable using point-of-sale systems, inventory software, email, and spreadsheets.
  • Availability to work a retail schedule that includes evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of an active retail role throughout the sales floor, receiving area, and outdoor garden center, with or without reasonable accommodation.
