What does a Hardware Product Engineer do?

A Hardware Product Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and overseeing the production of physical electronic devices or systems. They work on creating hardware components such as circuit boards, processors, and other electronic parts, ensuring they meet performance, quality, and safety standards. These engineers often collaborate with cross-functional teams including software developers, industrial designers, and manufacturing specialists to bring products from concept to market. Their role may also involve troubleshooting hardware issues and improving existing products.

How does a Hardware Product Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the product development cycle?

As a Hardware Product Engineer, you will work closely with cross-functional teams such as industrial design, firmware/software engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance throughout the product development cycle. This collaboration ensures that product specifications are met, design iterations are implemented effectively, and manufacturability is considered from early stages. Regular meetings, design reviews, and coordinated testing are common, requiring strong communication skills and the ability to translate technical requirements across disciplines. This teamwork is essential for launching successful hardware products on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hardware Product Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hardware Product Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or computer engineering, circuit design, and product development, usually backed by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD tools (such as Altium Designer or SolidWorks), PCB layout software, and industry certifications like IPC or Six Sigma is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective cross-functional communication help distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for developing reliable, innovative hardware products that meet technical specifications, cost targets, and project timelines.

Job description

Hudson River Trading (HRT) is seeking a Senior Hardware Product Manager to design and engineer the hardware product lines across our global trading environment. The ideal candidate is a well-rounded engineer - someone who knows finite element analysis, thermodynamics, measurement and instrumentation, manages projects, negotiates fiercely with vendors, and still geeks out over the best way to route DLC piping through a chassis. If you get a thrill from driving projects with diverse requirements to achieve an elegant hardware design, this role is for you.

Responsibilities

  • Product Line Engineering: Gather requirements directly from trading teams, drive system designs, overhaul underperforming components and designs, and retire legacy lines. You understand board, server, and rack design, and can connect that to the datacenter. You are equally comfortable prototyping and lab-testing product lines and delivering them to production.
  • Strategic Sourcing & Negotiation: Manage relationships with ODM and JDM partners and hold them accountable to delivery milestones through the full lifecycle of board and server designs.
  • Engineering Partnership: Bridge between requirements and deliverables. You must speak the hardware layer's language (PCIe topology, air and coolant flows, voltage and signal integrity) and be able to connect that to the network, OS, and application layers.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 10+ years in hardware product engineering or product management, with mechanical or electrical engineering experience (PE/FE) strongly preferred. Experience working with ODM and JDM vendors is strongly preferred.
  • Technical Fluency: Deep understanding of the mechanical and electrical design of a production rackmount server. Direct experience with DLC systems is strongly preferred. You can confidently go toe-to-toe with a vendor's engineering team during a design review.
  • Systems Savvy: Strong understanding of a production rack, from network and hardware through power and cooling dynamics. You know the laws of thermodynamics and how they apply to a datacenter setting. You get excited about CAD designs and data visualizations.
  • Industry Standards: Familiarity with Open Compute Project, MGX, heat rejection and voltage rack standards. PCIe, Redfish, OpenBMC knowledge is desirable. Linux server experience is desirable.
  • Commercial Acumen: You can manage BOMs, RFQs, and RFPs. You're comfortable being the point of contact with hardware vendors.
  • Maker Mindset: Highly autonomous, with a "roll-up-your-sleeves" mentality. You have a passion for engineering excellence and data-driven design.
  • Long-Term Growth: You are a hands-on leader who can execute independently today while scaling to lead a team tomorrow.
  • Global Perspective: Ability to travel, build on-the-ground vendor relationships, and navigate regional market nuances.

The estimated base salary range for this position is 200,000 to 300,000 USD per year (or local equivalent). The base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This role will also be eligible for discretionary performance-based bonuses and a competitive benefits package.
