Locomotive Engineer

POSITION: Locomotive Engineer

REPORTS TO: Manager of Locations/Location Supervisor

JOB TYPE: Full Time

JOB SUMMARY: The Locomotive Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of locomotives within the railyard. This position ensures compliance with all safety regulations, conducts equipment inspections, and works closely with yard personnel to coordinate train movements. A successful candidate will possess strong situational awareness, mechanical knowledge, and the ability to make critical decisions while operating locomotives in a fast-paced environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate locomotives to transport railcars within the railyard and ensure safe movement per operational guidelines and procedures.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections on locomotives, ensuring all mechanical components are in proper working order.
  • Interpret and follow train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with yard personnel, dispatchers, and supervisors to coordinate safe and efficient rail movements.
  • Monitor speed, air brakes, and other locomotive functions to ensure safe operation.
  • Identify and report mechanical issues, malfunctions, or safety concerns to maintenance personnel.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, including FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) regulations and company policies.
  • Assist in coupling and uncoupling railcars as needed, using hand signals or radio communication.
  • Maintain accurate records of locomotive operations, inspections, and any incidents occurring during shifts.
  • Ensure compliance with hazardous materials handling guidelines when transporting such cargo.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb on and off locomotives, railcars, and other equipment safely.
  • Capable of walking, bending, standing, and working in outdoor conditions for extended periods.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for operating controls.

Lifting/Carrying:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs occasionally.

Work Hours:

  • Must be available for various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required by operational needs.
  • Overtime may be required based on workload demands.

Equipment Requirements:

  • Experience operating locomotives and rail yard equipment.
  • Knowledge of hand tools for minor repairs and adjustments.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Prior experience as a locomotive engineer or similar role preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Locomotive Engineer Certification as required by FRA regulations.
  • Knowledge of railroad operating rules, signals, and safety practices.

Skills:

  • Strong communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make critical decisions under pressure.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on safety and compliance.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for identifying locomotive issues.

Language and Reasoning Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating manuals, and work orders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and precipitation.
  • Exposure to loud noises, dust, and vibrations.
  • Requires working around moving machinery and heavy equipment.

Vision/Hearing/Speaking:

  • Must have adequate vision for reading gauges, signals, and train orders.
  • Good hearing to interpret radio and verbal communication in a noisy environment.
  • Clear speech to effectively communicate with coworkers and supervisors.
