What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a HAPS (High Altitude Platform Station) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a HAPS Engineer, you need a solid background in aerospace engineering, telecommunications, and systems integration, typically with a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools, satellite communication systems, and regulatory standards is crucial. Problem-solving, teamwork, and clear communication are vital soft skills for managing complex projects and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative deployment of high-altitude platforms for reliable connectivity and surveillance.

What are some common challenges faced by HAPS (High Altitude Pseudo Satellite) engineers when developing and deploying these systems?

Engineers working on HAPS often encounter unique challenges such as maintaining reliable connectivity at high altitudes, ensuring energy efficiency for extended flight durations, and dealing with extreme weather conditions. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—such as avionics, communications, and software specialists—is crucial to address these issues. Additionally, meeting regulatory requirements and coordinating with ground operations adds layers of complexity to both the design and deployment phases.

What are HAPS (High Altitude Platform Stations)?

HAPS, or High Altitude Platform Stations, are unmanned aerial vehicles, balloons, or airships that operate in the stratosphere, typically between 20 and 50 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. They serve as communication relays or provide surveillance, environmental monitoring, and other services, acting as an alternative or supplement to satellites. HAPS can stay aloft for extended periods, offering wide-area coverage, especially in remote or underserved regions. Their applications include disaster recovery, rural connectivity, and environmental data collection.

Job description

Assembly Technician - Battery

Location: Moriarty, NM

Job Type: Full-Time

Who Are We:

Sceye is a high-growth technology company, building the next generation of instant communications, imaging and remote sensing infrastructure through stratospheric platforms.

Our lighter-than-air high-altitude platform systems (LTA HAPS) are capable of maintaining position over an operational area in the stratosphere (altitudes of 18 – 21km). They can carry multiple telecommunications, imaging and remote sensing payloads, providing unique functionality, cost, environmental and societal advantages.

Our HAPS can be deployed in a matter of days and at a fraction of the cost of traditional infrastructure solutions. This makes them an ideal solution for providing telecommunications connectivity, emergency solutions in the event of natural or other disasters, environmental and infrastructure monitoring, Earth observation and a range of defense applications.

Our customers & partners include some of the largest global telecommunications companies, infrastructure operators, climate researchers, civil and defense agencies.

At Sceye, we aim high, and we want you to join us at the stratospheric edge of innovation. As part of our mission-driven team, you’ll contribute to building breakthrough technologies that are changing the way we connect and observe the world. We are looking for individuals who bring not only deep expertise but also bold vision and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

About the Position:

The Battery Assembly Technician is a hands-on role responsible for assisting the Power Systems team in building battery sub-assemblies for our high-altitude platforms. We are looking to build a strong local team and strongly encourage candidates from the Moriarty, Edgewood, East Mountains, and Albuquerque areas to apply.

You do not need prior aerospace or EV experience to succeed here. If you know how to solder, have basic experience working with AC/DC electrical systems, and are eager to learn, we will provide the on-the-job training needed. You will focus on critical foundational work, such as cell preparation and stacking 6-cell (6P) modules, while the lead engineer handles the high-voltage final pack integration.

What You’ll Do:

  • Cell Preparation & Assembly: Prepare battery cells and assemble foundational components, including stacking and building 6-cell (6P) battery modules.
  • Electrical Work: Perform basic soldering, route basic AC/DC wiring, and connect components safely.
  • Tool Operation: Use standard hand tools, power tools, and basic measurement equipment to assemble hardware.
  • Quality Check: Follow basic step-by-step instructions and perform simple visual inspections to ensure your work matches the provided examples.
  • Safety & Cleanliness: Follow basic safety rules for handling electrical parts and maintain a clean, organized workspace.

What We’re Looking For:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of electrical systems (e.g., comfortable handling AC/DC wiring, automotive electrical repairs, or basic electronics).
  • Hands-on ability to solder components.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • General hands-on experience in mechanical, electrical, or general assembly (strong DIY experience is perfectly acceptable).
  • Willingness to learn how to follow basic build instructions (no prior expert knowledge of complex engineering drawings required; on-the-job training will be provided).
  • Reliable transportation to commute to the Moriarty, NM production facility.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications (Not Required – We will train you!):

  • Any previous exposure to handling batteries or making cables/harnesses.
  • A strong mechanical aptitude and a habit of doing clean, detailed work.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • On-site role at the Moriarty, NM production facility.
  • Standing, bending, and working at a bench for extended periods.
  • Lifting up to 35 lbs unassisted.
  • Basic PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) will be provided and is required when working with active batteries.

What We Offer:

At Sceye, we’re building more than high-altitude platforms—we’re building a workplace where people (and their pups) thrive. Here’s what you’ll enjoy:

  • Chef-Prepared Lunches – Fresh, onsite meals to keep you fueled and focused.
  • Snacks & Refreshments – Enjoy a variety of snacks and drinks available throughout the day.
  • Wellness Perks – Access to a gym, pickleball court, and an outdoor dog kennel.
  • Dog-Friendly Environment – Bring your four-legged friends to work and enjoy a pet-welcoming space.
  • Comprehensive Health Coverage – Medical, dental, vision, and disability insurance, with over 82% of premiums covered—and 100% for everything else.
  • 401(k) with Match – Company contributions that are yours from day one.
  • High-Performance Culture – Join a collaborative, inclusive environment where your work helps shape the future of aerospace.

Equal Opportunity Employer:

Sceye is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected status.

We encourage individuals from all backgrounds to apply, especially those who bring unique perspectives and experiences that can help us grow and innovate. If you require reasonable accommodation during the application or interview process, please contact us—we’re happy to assist.
