What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a HAPS (High Altitude Platform Station) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a HAPS Engineer, you need a solid background in aerospace engineering, telecommunications, and systems integration, typically with a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools, satellite communication systems, and regulatory standards is crucial. Problem-solving, teamwork, and clear communication are vital soft skills for managing complex projects and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative deployment of high-altitude platforms for reliable connectivity and surveillance.

What are some common challenges faced by HAPS (High Altitude Pseudo Satellite) engineers when developing and deploying these systems?

Engineers working on HAPS often encounter unique challenges such as maintaining reliable connectivity at high altitudes, ensuring energy efficiency for extended flight durations, and dealing with extreme weather conditions. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—such as avionics, communications, and software specialists—is crucial to address these issues. Additionally, meeting regulatory requirements and coordinating with ground operations adds layers of complexity to both the design and deployment phases.

What is the difference between Haps vs Event Coordinator?

AspectHapsEvent Coordinator
Required CredentialsVaries; often includes event planning or hospitality experienceTypically requires event planning certifications or related experience
Work EnvironmentEvent platforms, online event management, virtual or hybrid eventsPhysical event venues, conference centers, or outdoor locations
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, event platforms, marketing agenciesHotels, event planning firms, corporate organizations
Common Search & ComparisonHaps vs Event Coordinator

Haps and Event Coordinators both focus on organizing events, but Haps primarily involves managing virtual or hybrid events through digital platforms, while Event Coordinators often handle in-person events at physical locations. The required skills and environments differ, with Haps leaning towards online event management and technology use, whereas Event Coordinators work directly with clients and venues to execute physical events.

What are HAPS (High Altitude Platform Stations)?

HAPS, or High Altitude Platform Stations, are unmanned aerial vehicles, balloons, or airships that operate in the stratosphere, typically between 20 and 50 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. They serve as communication relays or provide surveillance, environmental monitoring, and other services, acting as an alternative or supplement to satellites. HAPS can stay aloft for extended periods, offering wide-area coverage, especially in remote or underserved regions. Their applications include disaster recovery, rural connectivity, and environmental data collection.

Job description

Mission Operations Engineer – Ground Systems

Status: Full Time, Exempt

Location: Moriarty, NM

Reports to: Chief of Mission Operations

Who Are We:

Sceye is a high-growth technology company, building the next generation of instant communications, imaging and remote sensing infrastructure through stratospheric platforms. Our lighter-than-air high-altitude platform systems (LTA HAPS) are capable of maintaining position over an operational area in the stratosphere (altitudes of 18 – 21km). They can carry multiple telecommunications, imaging and remote sensing payloads, providing unique functionality, cost, environmental and societal advantages.

Our HAPS be deployed in a matter of days and at a fraction of the cost of traditional infrastructure solutions. This makes them an ideal solution for providing telecommunications connectivity, emergency solutions in the event of natural or other disasters, environmental and infrastructure monitoring, Earth observation and a range of defense applications.

Our customers & partners include some of the largest global telecommunications companies, infrastructure operators, climate researchers, civil and defense agencies.

At Sceye, we aim high, and we want you to join us at the stratospheric edge of innovation. As part of our mission-driven team, you’ll contribute to building breakthrough technologies that are changing the way we connect and observe the world. We are looking for individuals who bring not only deep expertise but also bold vision and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

About the Position:

Sceye is seeking a full-time Mission Operations Engineer – Ground Systems to join our Mission Operations Team. This role is pivotal in developing, maintaining, and operating mission-critical ground systems—both hardware and software—that support Sceye’s lighter-than-air High Altitude Platform System (HAPS). You’ll collaborate closely with Mission Operations, Software, and Engineering teams to design, build, test, and operate the next generation of Sceye’s ground systems. In addition to technical development, you’ll support pre-flight planning, console operations during missions, and post-flight data analysis.

This position is ideal for an engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys hands-on system work, and wants to directly influence the performance, safety, and reliability of next-generation aerospace systems.

What You’ll Do:

Test Design & Execution

  • Automate test procedures, capture results, and document anomalies
  • Develop intuitive interfaces that help operators identify issues and monitor key telemeters

Scripting & Development

  • Author scripts or test applications to validate functionality and performance
  • Create UI components for test and simulator tools
  • Submit software change requests and support validation during feature development

System Operations & Administration

  • Manage and maintain test environments (hardware and software)
  • Perform system administration on Linux-based platforms
  • Apply networking skills to manage distributed ground systems

Radio Frequency & Software-Defined Radio (Optional but Valuable)

  • Interface with RF hardware and SDRs to validate signal processing and communications

Simulation & Visualization

  • Develop or use simulation and visualization tools to model system behavior
  • Integrate results into system acceptance and validation workflows

Beyond-Line-of-Sight (BLOS) Systems

  • Support and troubleshoot systems operating BLOS, addressing data latency and accuracy challenges

What We’re Looking For:

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in aerospace, mechanical, electrical, software, computer engineering, or a physical science (emphasis on lab/research experience)
  • 5+ years of professional experience in ground control system (GCS) design and/or testing
  • Experience testing aerospace systems
  • Strong Linux skills and basic system administration knowledge
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting language (Python or Ruby preferred)
  • Ability to write, audit, and maintain test scripts, validation code, and UIs for internal tools
  • Understanding of human-factor design principles for UI/UX
  • Experience with data analysis and aggregation of large datasets
  • Ability to interpret requirements and demonstrate verification/validation methods

Preferred / Nice to Have

  • Hands-on experience with software-defined radios (SDR) or RF hardware
  • Familiarity with simulation modeling and visualization tools
  • Experience with Beyond-Line-of-Sight (BLOS) communications and related interfaces

Soft Skills

  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical mindset
  • Clear, effective communication across cross-functional and multi-functional teams
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional documentation habits
  • Adaptable, proactive, and eager to learn new technologies
  • Collaborative and comfortable working across disciplines
  • Curious and driven to innovate

What We Offer:

At Sceye, we’re building more than high-altitude platforms—we’re building a workplace where people (and their pups) thrive. Here’s what you’ll enjoy:

  • Chef-Prepared Lunches – Fresh, onsite meals to keep you fueled and focused.
