What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hand Cutter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hand Cutter, you need strong manual dexterity, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of materials and cutting techniques, often gained through on-the-job training or vocational courses. Familiarity with hand tools, measuring devices, and sometimes specialized cutting equipment is important for accuracy and efficiency. Dependability, good hand-eye coordination, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure precise cuts, minimize material waste, and contribute to high-quality finished products.

What are some common safety challenges faced by Hand Cutters, and how are they typically addressed on the job?

Hand Cutters often work with sharp tools and machinery, making safety a top priority. Common challenges include the risk of cuts, repetitive motion injuries, and handling heavy or awkward materials. Job description

Description:

Good Harvest Market, Waukesha County's largest independently owned natural and organic grocer, is hiring a full-time Meat Cutter. Our meat department combines an old-school, friendly neighborhood butcher feel with a focus on humanely raised, grass-fed and pasture-raised meats and sustainably sourced seafood.

This role splits time between our cutting room and our meat counter. You'll cut and prepare product in the back, then bring that work to life at the case, serving customers directly, answering questions, and helping them figure out what to do with what they're buying. It's a different rhythm than a high-volume specialist shop where cutters only cut. Here, the variety and the customer relationship are part of the job.

This is a development role for someone who already has hands-on meat-cutting experience and wants to build toward full proficiency. It is not an entry-level position, and we're not able to train someone from a complete beginner level.

This is also a great fit for chefs and cooks with hands-on meat experience. Culinary backgrounds bring strong knife skills and food knowledge, and you're often a natural at the counter, helping customers figure out how to prepare what they're buying.

Flexible retail availability is needed, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

About You

  • Our mission statement speaks to you: "To passionately serve and nourish our community with organic, local, and more sustainable options."
  • You like to turn frowns upside down.
  • Going above and beyond is your normal. You can't help it, because you're awesome.
  • You value independently owned businesses and believe people can vote with their dollars.
  • You want to work in a family-focused, customer-friendly environment dedicated to serving only the best product.
  • You're equally comfortable working heads-down in the cutting room and chatting with a customer about how to grill the ribeye they just bought.
  • You're coachable. You have a foundation, and you're hungry to build on it.

About Us

  • We pay weekly, every Friday.
  • Employees receive a generous in-store purchase discount, also applicable at Hop Harvest & Vine.
  • Full and part-time staff can participate in our Simple IRA Retirement Match plan (must be at least 18).
  • Full-time team members get paid holidays, paid time off, and enrollment in our group health plans (medical, dental, vision); we also pay for life and disability benefits. Part-time team members working 20+ hours/week get holiday pay.
  • We promote from within whenever possible.
  • We provide an educational, team-oriented environment. Our employees love working together.

Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Providing exceptional customer service with a smile.
  • Cutting and preparing cuts of meat from ruminants, pork, and poultry, with growing proficiency across the full range as your skills develop.
  • Serving customers directly from the meat case, including answering questions, suggesting cuts and preparation methods, and wrapping product for purchase.
  • Splitting time between the cutting room and the service counter as business needs require.
  • Working primarily in the cutting room, where temperatures stay between 40 and 50 degrees.
  • Lifting and carrying product up to 100 pounds, repetitive arm and hand movements, eye-hand coordination, hand strength, and extended standing.
  • Maintaining high standards for sanitation, freshness, trim, and cutting accuracy.
  • Cleaning equipment.
  • Assisting with other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • At least 1 year of hands-on experience cutting whole-muscle or primal cuts of meat in a retail meat department, butcher shop, or professional kitchen. Experience limited to slicing deli meats, working a deli counter, or general food service without direct meat-cutting responsibility does not meet this requirement.
  • Minimum 2 years of customer service experience.
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Flexible retail availability as needed.

Good Harvest Market is a proud equal opportunity employer
