The main difference between a Hair Stylist Intern and a Hair Stylist is that interns are in training, often without a license, focusing on gaining experience. Hair Stylists are licensed professionals who provide styling services to clients. Interns typically work under supervision, while licensed stylists operate independently or as part of a team, offering a full range of styling services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hair Stylist Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hair Stylist Intern, you need a foundational knowledge of hair cutting, coloring, and styling techniques, often gained through cosmetology school or training and a state-issued license or permit. Familiarity with salon tools, basic scheduling software, and sanitation protocols is typically required. Strong customer service, attention to detail, and willingness to learn help you stand out in this client-focused environment. These skills and qualities ensure a high standard of service, client satisfaction, and a successful start in the beauty industry.

What are some common challenges Hair Stylist Interns face during their training period?

As a Hair Stylist Intern, one of the most common challenges is balancing hands-on practice with learning theoretical concepts, such as sanitation and client consultation techniques. Interns often need to adapt quickly to a fast-paced salon environment while gaining confidence in executing various hair services under supervision. Additionally, managing constructive feedback from senior stylists and building rapport with clients can be initially daunting but are essential for growth. Overcoming these challenges helps interns develop strong technical and interpersonal skills, paving the way for a successful transition to a full-time stylist role.

Do cosmetology interns get paid?

Hair stylist interns may or may not receive payment, depending on the salon or program. Some internships are unpaid and focus on skill development, while others offer stipends or hourly wages, especially if they are part of a formal training program or require certification. It is important to clarify the compensation terms before starting an internship.

What is a hair stylist intern?

A hair stylist intern is a trainee who works under the supervision of experienced stylists to learn hair cutting, coloring, and styling techniques. The internship provides hands-on experience, often requiring basic cosmetology training or certification, and may involve assisting with client services and salon operations.

What are Hair Stylist Interns?

Hair Stylist Interns are individuals who are gaining practical experience in a salon setting while working towards becoming licensed hair stylists. During their internship, they assist senior stylists with tasks such as shampooing, blow-drying, and prepping clients, as well as observing various hair cutting, coloring, and styling techniques. This role helps interns develop their technical and customer service skills under the supervision of experienced professionals. Internships are often a required part of cosmetology programs and provide valuable hands-on training before entering the workforce as a licensed stylist.

How to make $100,000 as a Hair Stylist?

A hair stylist intern typically needs to gain experience, develop a strong client base, and increase skills to earn high income. Stylists often supplement their income through tips, retail product sales, and working in high-end salons or offering specialized services. Building a reputation and expanding services can help reach higher earnings over time.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
