Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Staff Scientist to join our personal care division at our Bridgewater, NJ facility This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the R&D function. This position will report to Technical Service Director.


The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Experience in testing personal care products on consumers.
  • Work closely with hair stylist and help troubleshoot formulation issues when necessary.
  • Work with support groups and the sales team on testing prototypes and market benchmarks.
  • Develop new testing methodologies to show benefits of existing raw materials in finished formulations.
  • Interface/collaborate with key customers.
  • Travel Responsibilities โ€“ You will get to see the US and meet your colleagues 10% of the time.
  • Actively contribute to the organizational goals by taking initiative, executing on goals and focusing on performance and safety.
  • Improve the organization capacity and capabilities through building collaborative relationships, optimizing diverse talent and utilizing positive communications and influence with others.


In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:

  • A minimum of a Bachelorโ€™s degree with 10 yearsโ€™ experience in formulating personal care products.
  • 5-7 years' experience in formulating hair care products (shampoos, conditioners, treatments, masks, gels).
  • Good people skills and good track record in managing teams and working well with the sales organization.
  • Familiar with project management and works well in team environments.


The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. preferred.
  • Efficient in statistical and/or image analysis Skin care or make-up formulation is a plus.
  • Experienced in evaluating hair care ingredients and developing methodologies to do it.
  • Demonstrated responsible and ethical behavior at all times.
  • The ability to help the company drive greater value through understanding the business, making complex decisions and creating the new and different.
