These competencies ensure accurate product assessments, regulatory compliance, and the creation of safe, effective hair care products.

What is hair product testing?

Hair product testing is the process of evaluating hair care products, such as shampoos, conditioners, and styling items, to ensure their safety, effectiveness, and quality before they reach consumers. This involves both laboratory tests and real-world use by volunteers or professional testers to assess factors like irritation, efficacy, and user satisfaction. Hair product testers provide valuable feedback that helps manufacturers improve formulations and comply with regulatory standards.

Job description

Senior Scientific Liaison II, Hair Color Scientific Valorization, L'Oréal Research & Innovation - Clark, New Jersey, United States
Hello, we're L'Oréal, we're not just building brands; we're shaping how the world experiences beauty (and it takes a lot of cool jobs to do it).
Intrigued? Keep reading, this might be the opportunity you've been searching for.
Who We Are
Join us at L'Oréal, the world's #1 beauty company present in over 150 markets. For over a century, we have been transforming; fueled by data, tech, innovation, and science. Together, we tackle big challenges while making sure we stay committed to making the world a more inclusive and a better place for everyone & our planet.
At L'Oréal Research & Innovation we are pushing the boundaries of Science & Tech. We invest heavily in cutting-edge research, leveraging advanced technologies to understand skin, hair, and microbiome, while discovering new active ingredients and launching outperforming formulas. Our 3,500 L'Oréal R&I experts leverage Science & Technology to invent safe, trustable, sustainable & responsible beauty products and experiences that will change people's lives.
As a Senior Scientific Liaison II in Hair Color Scientific Valorization, you will act as a strategic scientific partner to Hair Color brands, supporting product development from early concept through market launch with a critical focus on:
  • Strategic scientific partnership with Marketing
  • Early collaboration with laboratory partners to anticipate future scientific claims enabled by technology innovation
  • Claims direction and substantiation strategy
  • Scientific storytelling and narrative development
  • Coordination of innovative, fit-for-purpose testing

This role goes beyond task execution by contributing scientific judgment, interpretation, and strategic input at the brand level. The Senior Scientific Liaison II embeds scientific thinking early, helping brands anticipate opportunities, risks, and claim potential tied to technology evolution, while operating within the overarching Hair Color scientific framework and governance.
A Day in the Life:
Marketing Partnership & Strategic Scientific Guidance
Start your day partnering closely with Hair Color DMI teams, acting as a scientific thought partner during concept development, renovation, and launch planning. You help shape claim direction and scientific narratives by translating scientific opportunities and constraints into clear, brand-relevant strategic options.
You also work in close collaboration with laboratory, formulation, and evaluation teams to anticipate how technology innovation, performance mechanisms, and measurement capabilities can enable future claims, renovation pathways, or platform scalability-raising key scientific questions early to avoid downstream claim limitations.
Scientific Communication & Asset Review
Review and validate scientific content across concepts, cartons, packaging, advertising copy, websites, e-commerce descriptions, training materials, and education assets, ensuring technical accuracy, consistency, and alignment with the intended scientific story.
Support activation by helping ensure scientific narratives are clear, differentiated, and usable across downstream touchpoints.
Claims Strategy & Testing Approach
Contribute to the definition of claims direction and substantiation pathways in partnership with DMI. Identify claim gaps, risks, and opportunity zones early, and recommend appropriate testing strategies (global leverage vs. zone-specific) aligned with ambition, timelines, and scientific credibility.
Proactively partner with laboratory and evaluation teams to anticipate claim opportunities and constraints driven by technology innovation, formulation architecture, and testing methodology-interrogating assumptions around mechanism, relevance, and feasibility to unlock stronger, more durable claims.
Testing Coordination & Scientific Interpretation
Work closely with laboratory, Claims, Safety, Analytical, Clinical, and Evaluation Intelligence teams to coordinate approved testing.
Analyze and interpret results not only to inform immediate next steps, but also to shape interpretation frameworks that support future claim activation, renovation potential, and evolution of scientific narratives across the portfolio.
Scientific Storytelling, Activation & Advocacy
Translate data into coherent, differentiated scientific stories for Hair Color brands, ensuring consistency across communication channels.
Serve as a scientific advocate for Hair Color technologies by enabling Marketing, Education, and external-facing teams with accurate, compelling scientific narratives that elevate perceived value, credibility, and consumer relevance.
Cross-Functional & Global Collaboration
Act as a US scientific voice in collaboration with global R&I hubs, laboratory partners, and key stakeholders, ensuring market relevance and clarity.
Partner with Legal and Regulatory teams as needed and escalate precedent-setting, high-risk, or portfolio-level topics to Scientific Governance when appropriate.
We Are Looking For:
  • Education
    • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline required
    • Master's degree or PhD preferred
  • Experience
  • 7+ years of experience in cosmetics, personal care, or a related industry; Hair (Color) technical knowledge preferred
    • Strong background in scientific communication, claims substantiation, and testing methodology
    • Experience working in complex, matrixed, international environments
  • Skills & Competencies
    • Strategic thinking and ability to translate science into brand-relevant value
    • Strong scientific judgment and ability to challenge and refine ideas constructively
    • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills for technical and non-technical audiences
    • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects while maintaining scientific rigor
    • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across functions and geographies
  • The ability to be onsite, in the office 3 days a week as this is an essential function of the position (required)
  • Authorization to work in the United States on a full-time, permanent, ongoing basis is required. No immigration support/sponsorship offered for this role.
