What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HV Substation Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HV Substation Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, with expertise in high voltage systems and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with industry-standard design software like AutoCAD, ETAP, or Revit, as well as knowledge of relevant codes and standards (such as IEEE or IEC), is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in project coordination and client interactions. These skills ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable design of substations critical to modern power infrastructure.

What is the difference between Hv Substation Design Engineer vs Power Systems Engineer?

AspectHv Substation Design EngineerPower Systems Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, relevant certificationsBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering, often with power system certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning substations, working with electrical drawings, on-site inspectionsAnalyzing power systems, modeling, system planning, and optimization
Industry UsageUtility companies, substation construction firms, energy providersUtilities, consulting firms, energy companies, grid operators

While both roles focus on electrical power, the Hv Substation Design Engineer specializes in designing and implementing high-voltage substations, whereas the Power Systems Engineer concentrates on overall power system analysis, planning, and optimization. The former is more involved in detailed substation projects, while the latter works on broader system performance and reliability.

What are the most common challenges faced by an HV Substation Design Engineer during project execution?

HV Substation Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple stakeholders (including utility clients, contractors, and equipment suppliers) to ensure that designs meet technical specifications and regulatory standards. Managing tight project timelines while adapting to potential changes in scope or site conditions can also be demanding. Additionally, integrating new technologies or retrofitting existing substations requires meticulous attention to detail and effective communication within multidisciplinary teams. Staying updated with evolving industry standards and ensuring the safety and reliability of designs are key aspects of the role.

What is an HV Substation Design Engineer?

An HV Substation Design Engineer is a specialized electrical engineer who designs and plans high voltage substations, which are critical components in the transmission and distribution of electrical power. They are responsible for creating detailed layouts, selecting equipment such as transformers and circuit breakers, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. Their work involves collaboration with utility companies, civil engineers, and project managers to deliver reliable and efficient substation solutions. The role requires strong technical knowledge of electrical systems, CAD software skills, and a thorough understanding of grid requirements.

Work Arrangement: Full-time in-office for the first 90 days. After that, hybrid flexibility may be available (3 days in office) and 9/80 schedule options based on performance and business needs.
Overview
Established engineering firm seeking an experienced Electrical Project Engineer to lead high-voltage (HV) substation design projects. This role combines technical leadership (Protection & Controls and/or Physical Design) with project execution responsibility, including schedule, budget, QA/QC oversight, and client coordination.
This is not a distribution, low/medium voltage, or O&M-focused role. Candidates must have direct HV substation design experience.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as Project Lead or Technical Specialist on HV substation projects (up to 765kV).
  • Lead small, single-discipline electrical project teams.
  • Oversee detailed design for EPC and engineering-only substation projects.
  • Develop and review Protection & Control deliverables, including:
    • Protective relays
    • One-line and three-line diagrams
    • AC/DC schematics
    • Relay panel wiring diagrams
    • Equipment wiring and panel arrangements
  • Develop and review physical substation design deliverables, including:
    • Yard layout plans (2D/3D)
    • Grounding and lightning protection plans
    • Control building layouts
    • Auxiliary AC/DC systems
  • Perform and oversee QA/QC reviews of engineering packages.
  • Prepare electrical equipment specifications and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Manage design budgets, schedules, and quality standards.
  • Act as primary point of contact for clients on assigned projects.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Mentor junior engineers and review their work.
  • Support business development and proposal efforts as needed.
  • Occasional travel for client meetings, design reviews, and site visits.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (accredited program).
  • Minimum 5 years of high-voltage substation design experience.
  • Experience in either:
    • Protection & Controls design (protective relays, schematics, wiring), and/or
    • Physical substation design (yard layouts, grounding, structural/equipment layouts).
  • Project Lead experience on HV substation projects.
  • Experience managing scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Strong understanding of QA/QC processes and design review standards.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (preferred, not required).
  • Experience serving as technical lead for utility substation clients.
  • Experience performing formal QA/QC reviews.
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office Suite.
Additional Information
  • Candidates must be eligible to complete standard pre-employment screening (background check, drug screen, etc.) in compliance with applicable laws.
  • This role offers long-term growth, technical leadership exposure, and involvement in complex utility-scale substation projects
