What is a gynecologic oncologist?

A gynecologic oncologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancers. They have advanced training in both obstetrics and gynecology as well as oncology, enabling them to provide comprehensive care that may include surgery, chemotherapy, and other treatments. These specialists often work as part of a multidisciplinary team to offer patients the best possible outcomes. Their expertise also extends to managing complex gynecologic conditions and providing follow-up care after cancer treatment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a gynecologic oncologist?

To thrive as a Gynecologic Oncologist, you need extensive knowledge in gynecology, oncology, and surgical procedures, supported by an MD or DO degree, completion of an OB/GYN residency, and a gynecologic oncology fellowship. Familiarity with advanced surgical systems, chemotherapy protocols, electronic health records (EHRs), and board certification is essential. Exceptional communication, compassion, and decision-making skills help in supporting patients through complex diagnoses and multidisciplinary care. These competencies enable precise treatment, effective patient support, and successful outcomes in a highly specialized and emotionally challenging medical field.

What are some common challenges gynecologic oncologists face when managing complex patient cases?

Gynecologic Oncologists often encounter challenges such as coordinating multidisciplinary care, managing patients with advanced or recurrent cancers, and staying updated with rapidly evolving treatment protocols. Balancing the emotional needs of patients and families while making evidence-based medical decisions can also be demanding. Additionally, the role often requires collaboration with surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, and oncology nurses to ensure comprehensive care, which can add layers of complexity to case management.

Overview

Seeking a Gynecologic Oncologist to practice high quality, innovative medicine at a community cancer subspecialty center with academic post.

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the West Michigan Cancer Center is recruiting a full-time Gynecologic Oncologist to join our team. WMCC is a multispecialty group that includes Radiation Oncologists, Gynecologic Oncologists, and other subspecialists. This position is to replace one of the two Gynecologic Oncologists who is departing October 2025. WMCC is owned by two large community hospitals in Kalamazoo, with surgeons providing surgery and inpatient care nearby. We have a strong partnership with Western Michigan University School of Medicine Ob/Gyn Residency program, with ongoing teaching and resident mentorship.

Our GYN Oncologists have access to advanced surgical and medical resources, including DaVinci Xi robotic systems, private anesthesia support, hospitalist partnerships, and PA support in clinic. The Radiation Oncology group provides innovative curative and palliative radiation services, and the GYN Oncology group collaborates with Medical Oncology for chemotherapy management. WMCC participates in NCORP clinical trials and hosts a multidisciplinary tumor board with community and resident involvement.

Responsibilities
  • Join a full-time Gynecologic Oncologist role to replace a departing colleague; contribute to outpatient, surgical, and inpatient care.
  • Maintain a largely outpatient robotic practice with access to DaVinci Xi systems and block time.
  • Provide surgical oncology services, including access to a state-of-the-art private anesthesia group and hospitalist partnerships.
  • Collaborate with Medical Oncology for chemotherapy management; participate in chemotherapy at hospital-based infusion rooms and through coordination with other oncology groups.
  • Share call duties with midlevel providers (1 in 4 weeks), with weekday backup call as needed.
  • Engage in teaching and administrative responsibilities; maintain a weekly schedule of 2 days in clinic, 2.5 days in surgery, and 0.5 days for administration and teaching.
  • Participate in a multidisciplinary tumor board and contribute to clinical trials access for patients.
  • Contribute to program development and mentorship for residents and fellows as part of the academic collaboration with WMU.
Qualifications
  • ABOG-approved Ob/Gyn residency completion.
  • GYN Oncology fellowship completion.
  • Eligibility or current appointment in a faculty position is favorable; willingness to engage in teaching and program development.
About Kalamazoo and WMCC
  • Kalamazoo is a small city with a population of about 75,000, offering college-town amenities and access to Lake Michigan, Chicago, and Detroit within convenient driving distances.
  • WMCC is a patient-centered practice focused on high-quality care, a positive work environment, work-life balance, and strong administrative support.
  • We are located near Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College; Kalamazoo is home to Stryker and Pfizer, contributing to the local economy.
