Job description

Job Title: Gymnastics Instructor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Grade:

Primary Department: Youth Development

Reports to: Youth Program Director

Revision Date: 4/27/2026 Leadership Level: Leader

The YMCA of Greater Hartford is an association open to all committed to helping people reach their potential in spirit, mind, and body. Our commitment is based on the belief that the purpose of this three-fold development is to live out the values of Caring, Honest, Respect and Responsibility.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provide gymnastics instruction to participants of different ages and ensure that they thrive and are successful within the program. In addition, this position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Monitor gymnastics activities of all participants, intervening to correct technique where necessary.
  2. Observe and spot athletes as they perform on various apparatus.
  3. Create and maintain positive relationships with participants, aiming to encourage them in a positive attitude.
  4. Prepares lesson plans for recreational classes
  5. Attends meetings pertinent to his or her position.
  6. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  7. All duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience and knowledge of gymnastics routines/equipment
  • Ability to work with children of all ages.
  • Able to communicate effectively with participants, parents, and other coaches.
  • Be a team player, must work well with others.
  • Show initiative as well as leadership skills.
  • Ability to think creatively and with an open mind.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 30 pounds in weight.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
