Job description

The Department of Pediatrics employs nearly 1,000 faculty and staff who work alongside employees of Riley Hospital for Children and students of Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) to make Riley Children's Health Indiana's largest and most skilled pediatric system. Job Summary
This role performs bioinformatic analysis of nucleotide sequencing from microbiome samples and host tissue, data management, literature research, technical writing, and reporting in support of research project(s); performs quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. This role consults with faculty researchers and laboratory research staff and provides input on research project evaluations and research project designs. This role also contributes to journal articles, grant proposals, and presentations to disseminate and share research findings.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Performs advanced bioinformatic and statistical analyses of gut microbiome and transcriptomic datasets, including taxonomic assignment, diversity analysis, functional pathway analysis, differential gene expression, and data visualization to support research objectives.
  • Consults with faculty and research staff on study design and analytic approaches; prepares written and visual summaries of analyses for manuscripts, presentations, and grant applications; and contributes to publications and funding proposals.
  • Oversees data management and quality control processes to ensure rigor and reproducibility; manages cohort metadata, databases, and sample inventories; and supports sequencing workflows and documentation standards.
  • Mentors laboratory members in bioinformatic methods, provide day-to-day operational leadership, and assists with regulatory documentation, laboratory organization, and collaborative research activities.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides experienced consultation and employs a variety of computational sequence analysis (mathematical and computing) tools to model and analyze biological data in support of researchers.
  • Accesses, extracts, and prepares data for analysis, including combining data run on multiple platforms as well as externally generated data in support of meta-analyses.
  • Installs, configures, customizes, and supports analytical software for data on research clusters; develops software and programming scripts for software and workflow systems utilized by researchers.
  • Undertakes performance and reliability assessments to ensure systems are performing to maximum productivity and scientific validity; participates in ongoing evaluation of new software, systems, approaches, and emerging technologies.
  • Documents consultation, analysis, and quality control efforts; contributes to grant and report writing.
  • Researches and stays up to date on emerging technologies/tools, trends, standards, and best practices related to bioinformatics.

EDUCATION
Required
  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in computer science, bioinformatics, biology, or related field).
