Job description

Job Title: Software Development Lead – Guidewire PolicyCenter
Tax Term: W2/1099 Only
Location: (Hybrid) Hartford, CT / Hunt Valley, MD / St Paul, MN / Atlanta, GA
Employment Type: Contract
Essential Requirements

  • Hands-on PolicyCenter background.

  • Genuine Guidewire development and integration work — not support-only. The person must be able to dive into Guidewire code, build APIs, and write integrations themselves.

  • Guidewire certification is mandatory (full certification, not Specialist-level). ACE certification is a bonus.

  • Located in, or willing to relocate to, Hartford, Atlanta, or Maryland (3 days onsite).

  • A true player-coach: writes code directly but can also run a small offshore team.

Work Locations

  • Hartford, CT

  • Hunt Valley, MD

  • St Paul, MN

  • Atlanta, GA

This is a player-coach who can crack open the code and repair a broken Apache Camel route inside the Integration Gateway.

  • Strong Guidewire (GW) ability, per the details in the JD

  • Hybrid setup (3 days onsite)

  • Current/active Guidewire certifications (required)

  • Technical lead background (at least 2 years)

  • Solid hands-on depth and the ability to field technical questions directly

  • Level 8 profile (roughly 5–8 years of experience)

Top 3 Required Skills

  • Guidewire PolicyCenter (Expert/P4) – 8+ years

  • Guidewire Integration – 5+ years

  • Guidewire Advanced Product Designer – 5+ years

  • Guidewire Certification

Disqualifiers

  • Candidates who aren't local.

  • Missing the mandatory Guidewire platform-specific experience.

  • Unable to meet the hybrid schedule (3 days onsite).

Role Summary

As a Software Development Lead, you'll act as the subject matter expert who builds and configures software systems across the full product lifecycle. You'll head up the design and rollout of forward-thinking Guidewire solutions while owning team decisions and handling stakeholder expectations. The position mixes higher-level technical architecture with direct, hands-on mentorship so project targets are hit inside a collaborative setting.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the design and delivery of inventive software solutions that fit client needs.

  • Run team meetings that promote collaboration and keep everyone aligned on project goals.

  • Coach team members to grow their skills and build a habit of continuous improvement.

  • Break down project requirements and convert them into technical specs for the dev team.

  • Assess and bring in new technologies to lift system performance and the user experience.

  • Own team decisions, manage stakeholders, and weigh in on key calls.

Required Skills

  • Guidewire PolicyCenter: Expert level (8+ years total experience preferred).

  • Guidewire Integration: Advanced level.

  • Guidewire Advanced Product Designer (APD): Expert level recommended.

  • Technical Leadership: 2–3 years leading.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Java

  • Design Innovation

  • Technical Architecture

Candidate Traits

  • A collaborative leader who can rally the team toward alignment.

  • A strong mentor centered on continuous improvement.

  • A deep subject matter expert who can manage stakeholder relationships.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, build, and integration of Guidewire PolicyCenter solutions.

  • Turn complicated project requirements into clear technical specs for dev teams.

  • Mentor junior developers and run collaborative team meetings.

  • Evaluate new technologies to tune system performance and user experience.

  • Handle stakeholder communication around technical decisions and project milestones.

Additional Technical Notes

The ideal candidate has moved past legacy messaging into the modern Guidewire Cloud Integration Gateway (IG) and the App Events framework.

  • Integration Gateway (IG): Must show Java (Apache Camel) proficiency. IG is built on Camel — without it, the required custom transformations aren't possible.

  • App Events: Centered on event-driven architecture (webhooks/REST) in the recent cloud releases (Niseko, Oulu, or Las Lenas).

  • APD Maturity: Experience needs to cover using Advanced Product Designer for live code/entity generation, not just product modeling.

Hybrid (3 days onsite) — Hartford, CT; Hunt Valley, MD; St Paul, MN; Atlanta, GA.

Strictly Required (Non-Negotiable)

  • Guidewire PolicyCenter Configuration on a current Cloud version (e.g., Niseko, Oulu, or Las Lenas). An on-premise version 10 certification no longer suffices for this cloud-native role.

Preferred "Gold Standard" (Tie-Breakers)

  • Guidewire ACE (PolicyCenter or Integration): The top tier of technical validation. ACE cert + Cloud experience is the strongest profile.

  • Guidewire Cloud Technical Certification: Specifically confirms knowledge of the Cloud Assurance API (CAA) and Integration Gateway.

  • AWS Certified Developer/Architect: Since Guidewire Cloud runs on AWS, this is a major nice-to-have for infrastructure-related work.

Required Skills

  • Guidewire PolicyCenter (Expert/P4) – 8+ years

  • Guidewire Integration – 5+ years

  • Guidewire Advanced Product Designer – 5+ years

  • Guidewire Certification

Disqualifiers

  • Non-local candidates.

  • Missing mandatory Guidewire platform-specific experience.

  • Unable to work the hybrid schedule (3 days onsite).
