Guard Pilot information

What is a guard pilot?

Guard Pilots are military aviators who serve in the Air National Guard or Army National Guard. Their primary duties include piloting aircraft for both state and federal missions, such as disaster response, homeland security, and combat operations. Guard Pilots may fly various types of aircraft, including fighters, cargo planes, and helicopters, depending on their unit and assignment. They balance military responsibilities with civilian life, often serving part-time while maintaining a civilian career. Training and qualifications are similar to those of active duty military pilots.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a guard pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Guard Pilot, you need a commercial or military pilot's license, strong aviation knowledge, and a thorough understanding of flight safety protocols. Familiarity with advanced avionics, navigation systems, and mission-specific equipment is typically required, along with completion of specialized military training and certifications. Exceptional decision-making, situational awareness, and teamwork skills are vital for handling high-pressure situations and coordinating with ground and air personnel. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring mission success and maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational effectiveness.

What are some common challenges guard pilots face during deployments, and how can they prepare for them?

Guard Pilots often encounter unique challenges during deployments, such as rapidly changing mission requirements, operating in unfamiliar or austere environments, and balancing civilian and military commitments. Preparing for these challenges involves maintaining a high level of proficiency through regular training, staying adaptable to new technologies and mission types, and fostering strong communication with both military teams and civilian employers. Building resilience and support networks within the unit also helps Guard Pilots manage the demands of deployment effectively.

What is the difference between Guard Pilot vs Security Pilot?

AspectGuard PilotSecurity Pilot
Required CertificationsCommercial Pilot License, Security ClearanceCommercial Pilot License, Security Clearance
Work EnvironmentAirborne security patrols, private security flightsAirborne security operations, surveillance flights
Employer & Industry UsagePrivate security firms, corporate securityGovernment agencies, private security companies

Both Guard Pilots and Security Pilots require similar certifications and often operate in airborne security roles. However, Guard Pilots typically focus on private security flights for corporations or individuals, while Security Pilots may work more frequently with government agencies or in surveillance roles. Understanding these distinctions helps clarify career paths and job expectations in airborne security services.

Job description

Company Overview:

MP Materials (NYSE: MP) is rebuilding American industrial capability for a new era of autonomy, robotics, and electrification.

We are the only U.S. company with a fully integrated rare earth supply chain—from mining and refining to advanced metal and magnet manufacturing. Our products include both the critical materials used to make permanent magnets and the finished magnets themselves—enabling next-generation technologies in robotics, automation, aerospace, transportation, defense, and energy systems. These materials are the foundation of physical AI—the convergence of computation, movement, and control.

We hire ambitious, mission-driven people who want to tackle complex challenges and shape the future of strategic industries. Our culture is rooted in teamwork, resiliency, and integrity, with a deep commitment to operational excellence and national purpose. MP is rapidly evolving from a materials producer into a leading U.S. manufacturer—and our people are driving that transformation.

Position Overview:

The Tool & Die Machinist manufactures, repairs, and improves precision tools, dies, jigs/fixtures, and custom components that support magnet manufacturing and pilot/process engineering. This role focuses on turning shafts, holding tight tolerances, and finishing critical features on new and existing tooling and equipment. You will collaborate with Process Engineers and Design Engineers to interpret drawings and GD&T, prototype variations of parts and tooling, and provide manufacturability feedback to accelerate

Position Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate manual and CNC lathes to turn shafts, journals, and threaded features, control runout, concentricity, and surface finish to spec.
  • Mill, drill, bore, and tap components on manual/CNC mills; perform precision layout and hole patterns.
  • Perform surface and cylindrical grinding (OD/ID) and honing to achieve tight tolerances and finishes on critical features.
  • Build, repair, and optimize tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and special tooling for production and R&D/pilot operations.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, isometrics, and 3D models; verify dimensions/tolerances before and during machining.
  • Program, set up, and prove out CNC jobs (conversational or CAM); select tooling, speeds/feeds, work holding, and offsets to meet quality and takt.
  • Inspect in process and final parts using micrometers, bore gauges, indicators, height gauges, pins, optical comparator, and (as available) CMM.
  • Hold tight tolerances as required (e.g., shaft/bore fits down to ±0.0005 in; critical features to ±0.0002 in) and document results.
  • Deburr and finish parts to meet surface roughness and edge break requirements.
  • Assemble, fit, and try out tooling; diagnose and correct issues (alignment, clearance, spring/stripper force, galling, wear).
  • Collaborate with Engineering on prototypes and engineering changes; redline prints and suggest design-for-manufacture/assembly (DFM/DFA) improvements.
  • Manage toolroom organization (5S), maintain machines and tooling, and track spares/consumables; coordinate heat treat and coating services when needed.
  • Record time, parts, and work details in SAP CMMS; maintain traceability/documentation as required.
  • Follow all safety procedures including machine guarding, LOTO, hot work, ventilation, and PPE; actively contribute to hazard identification and JHAs.
