What is the difference between Pilot Logistics vs Freight Coordinator?

AspectPilot LogisticsFreight Coordinator
CertificationsLogistics certifications, CDL, or related licensesLogistics or supply chain certifications, sometimes CDL
Work EnvironmentTransport companies, warehouses, logistics hubsShipping offices, warehouses, distribution centers
Industry UsageTransportation, freight, logistics companiesShipping, freight, supply chain management

While Pilot Logistics focuses on managing transportation operations, coordinating shipments, and overseeing logistics processes, Freight Coordinators primarily handle scheduling, documentation, and communication related to freight shipments. Both roles are essential in the supply chain but differ in responsibilities and daily tasks.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in pilot logistics, and how can they be managed effectively?

Professionals in Pilot Logistics often encounter challenges such as coordinating schedules across multiple teams, managing last-minute changes in flight plans, and ensuring regulatory compliance for crew and cargo. These challenges can be managed by maintaining strong communication with flight crews, ground staff, and dispatchers, as well as leveraging logistics software to streamline operations. Staying organized, anticipating potential disruptions, and having contingency plans in place are key to ensuring smooth operations in this fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pilot logistics professional?

To thrive as a Pilot Logistics professional, you need strong organizational skills, knowledge of supply chain operations, and typically a degree in logistics, transportation, or a related field. Familiarity with logistics management software, inventory tracking systems, and possibly certifications like the Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and multitasking abilities help you coordinate effectively with teams and respond to dynamic challenges. These skills ensure efficient movement of goods, minimize delays, and support seamless operations in the fast-paced logistics environment.

What is pilot logistics?

Pilot Logistics refers to the planning and coordination of resources and support necessary for pilots and their flight operations. This role typically involves managing the scheduling of pilots, ensuring compliance with aviation regulations, coordinating transportation and accommodation for crew, and overseeing the supply of essential materials like fuel and equipment. Effective pilot logistics help ensure flights are staffed, supplied, and executed safely and efficiently. This role is essential in both commercial and private aviation sectors.

Job description

About Us

Eden is pioneering sustainable natural resource recovery by using electricity to enhance subsurface permeability. Our Electrical Reservoir Stimulation technology offers a precise, water-efficient alternative to traditional hydraulic fracturing, reducing environmental risks while maximizing resource extraction.

Backed by leading public and private institutions, we have raised ~$24M, including $14M in dilutive capital from industry leaders such as Anglo American and Helmerich & Payne, along with climate-focused investors like the Grantham Foundation. Additionally, we have secured $10M in non-dilutive funding, primarily through four DOE ARPA-E grants that support our R&D in frontier industries.

Headquartered in Somerville, MA, and with an office in Houston, TX, Eden's team of 16 experts specialize in geology, high-voltage engineering, and subsurface tool design. This role is expected to be based in the Somerville HQ. We are actively demonstrating our next-generation permeability enhancement technology across diverse geologies worldwide, collaborating with industry leaders in geothermal energy, geologic hydrogen, carbon storage, and mining to redefine resource recovery for a carbon-neutral future.

We are actively running a field pilot and preparing for upcoming future field pilots across the country, in cooperation with our supportive technical partners.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Field Readiness and Preparation
    • Support the execution of detailed field plans for Electric Reservoir Stimulation (ERS) pilots, including mobilization, pre-ERS operations, equipment staging, field operations, and demobilization.
    • Work with both the R&D team and the engineering team to translate pilot objectives and tests into practical field work plans.
    • Coordinate field readiness across site hosts/clients, internal engineering, vendors, and subcontractors.
    • Help identify field constraints early, including: access, power, water, pressure-control needs, lifting/handling requirements, and permitting/regulations. Assist with preparing the proper permits.
    • Responsible for ensuring that required equipment, tools, spares, instrumentation, consumables, PPE, vehicles, rentals, and support services are available
    • Build and maintain equipment lists and packing lists for mobilization
    • Support building timelines and Gantt charts. Track performance vs planned timelines.
  • Logistics and Mobilization/Demobilization
    • Own pilot logistics from pre-mobilization through demobilization, including equipment preparation, shipping, site delivery, travel scheduling, lodging, rental vehicles, and field crew coordination.
    • Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors for equipment rentals, equipment deliveries, testing services, and other field support.
    • Coordinate real-time changes to the field plan with engineering, operations leadership, site representatives, and contractors.
  • Day to Day Field Leadership
    • Serve as the primary day-to-day field lead during ERS pilot execution.
    • Run daily field activities, including morning planning, task assignments, schedule reviews, contractor coordination, daily reports, and end-of-day progress updates. Proactively identify delays and required decisions.
    • Manage a small field team of approximately 1-4 people, including Eden personnel/technicians and contractors.
    • Act as the on-site point of contact for Eden during field execution, escalating technical, safety, schedule, or commercial issues as needed.
    • Own the field-level schedule during pilot execution and maintain a clear view of critical path activities.
    • Responsible for knowing how to troubleshoot electrical issues by having basic knowledge of electrical principles including currents, volts, circuits, and power.
    • Will oversee, and when necessary, perform routine maintenance services, and routine electrical services on various equipment
    • Support cost tracking for field-related expenses, including equipment, rentals, contractors, and travel.
    • Participate in/lead daily safety meetings, hazard analyses, and stop-work discussions.
    • Confirm that field personnel have the required safety training and understand site rules, PPE requirements, emergency procedures, exclusion zones, and equipment-specific hazards.
    • Maintain organized field records, including daily activity reports, equipment status, contractor reports, and test data.

Requirements

Required Qualifications and Abilities:

  • 4+ years of experience in field operations, preferably in oil and gas
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (petroleum engineering, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering) or a related technical field preferred. Equivalent hands-on field operations experience in oil and gas or industrial project execution will be considered.
  • Up 75% of time in the field during active operations
  • Experience coordinating field logistics, equipment mobilization, vendors, contractors, and small crews.
  • Interface with wellsite operations - knowledge of pressure/flow testing, pumps, tanks, downhole tools, well control, wireline, and related field deployment equipment
  • Strong safety mindset and willingness to stop work when conditions are unsafe. Trained in oil field safety requirements.
  • Ability to read and execute against work plans, test plans, equipment lists, schedules, and field procedures.
  • Comfortable with travel and extended time in the field during active pilot campaigns, potentially at remote field locations.

Nice to have's:

  • Oil and gas experience explicitly in completions, hydraulic fracturing, stimulation, wireline, and/or well testing
  • Experience with pilot-scale technology deployments or first-of-a-kind field trials.
  • Experience in other fields relevant to Eden's value proposition including geothermal or mining
  • Demonstrated ability to lead daily field activities and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working with pressure systems, electrical systems, fluid handling, downhole tools, or geophysical/wellbore data collection.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors under tight field schedules.
  • Operate and oversee heavy machinery including a forklift or telehandler.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, 401k
  • Vacation - Federal holidays off, Thanksgiving holidays, Christmas and New Year, 15 additional workdays per year (3-weeks) vacation time
  • Sick days, bereavement time
