Position purpose: The Indirect Tax Lead will be responsible for managing U.S. indirect tax matters, including sales and use tax, gross receipts taxes, business license taxes, and other transactional tax obligations, including related compliance, advisory, audit support, and operational processes. This role will include managing VAT and GST matters impacting U.S. operations and cross-border activities, including Canadian GST/HST and provincial indirect tax matters, and supporting broader global indirect tax initiatives as needed.

The role requires a strong technical foundation, practical business judgment, and the ability to collaborate effectively across finance, accounting, legal, operations, and external advisers in a fast-paced multinational environment. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate strong data analytics, process improvement, technology capabilities and automation solutions to enhance tax processes and reporting.


Primary duties will include:

  • U.S. Indirect Tax Compliance & Advisory
    • Manage U.S. sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, business license tax, and other transactional tax compliance processes, including review of filings, reconciliations, payments, and related reporting obligations.
    • Provide indirect tax guidance to internal stakeholders on U.S. transactional matters, vendor arrangements, customer invoicing, procurement activities, and operational initiatives.
    • Review taxability determinations and support implementation of appropriate indirect tax treatment for new business activities and transactions.
    • Partner with accounting and finance teams to ensure accurate indirect tax treatment and proper documentation within financial and operational processes.
  • Global Coordination – VAT & GST
    • Partner closely with the Head of Tax in EMEA on VAT and GST matters impacting U.S. operations, including cross-border transactions, intercompany flows, and global business initiatives.
    • Assist in assessing indirect tax implications of operational and supply chain changes involving the U.S. business.
    • Support coordination of information requests and implementation of processes related to global VAT/GST compliance and reporting obligations.
    • Support Canadian GST/HST and provincial indirect tax matters, including coordination of filings, reconciliations, and responses to tax authority inquiries.
  • Data Analytics, Technology & Process Improvement
    • Utilize Power Query, AI-enabled tools, Shopify, Vertex and other technology solutions to support indirect tax reporting, analytics, process optimization, and risk identification.
    • Assist with automation and enhancement of indirect tax processes and controls to improve efficiency, scalability, and data accuracy.
    • Collaborate with finance systems, ERP, and technology teams on indirect tax-related system improvements and configurations.
    • Support development of dashboards, reporting tools, and analytical processes to enhance visibility into indirect tax obligations and trends.
  • Audit, Risk & Process Improvement
    • Support indirect tax audits, notices, and inquiries from tax authorities in the U.S. and Canada, and prepare refund claims as needed.
    • Identify indirect tax risks and recommend process improvements and internal controls to enhance compliance and operational efficiency.
    • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and assess potential impact to the business.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Collaborate closely with other members of the U.S. tax team on broader tax department initiatives, cross-functional projects, and operational matters impacting the tax function.
    • Partner effectively with finance, accounting, procurement, legal, payroll, and operational teams to support business initiatives and ensure appropriate indirect tax treatment.
    • Coordinate with external advisers and service providers as needed.
    • Contribute to broader tax department projects and strategic initiatives.

To land this role you will need:

  • 5+ years of indirect tax experience in public accounting and/or multinational corporate environment.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. sales and use tax and other transactional taxes required.
  • Experience supporting multinational operations and cross-border transactions.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

What makes you stand out: 

  • CPA or MST preferred.
  • Experience with Canadian GST/HST, provincial indirect taxes, and international VAT/GST concepts preferred.
  • Experience with Shopify, Power Query, AI-enabled tools, data analytics, and process automation solutions preferred.
  • Familiarity with Oracle, or similar ERP platforms preferred.

Education / Certification Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or related field required.

Working environment: 

  • 4 days per week onsite, 1 day per week remote
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively across jurisdictions and functions.
