Group Project information

What is a group project?

Group projects are collaborative assignments in which a team of individuals works together to achieve a common academic or professional goal. These projects are designed to promote teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills by requiring participants to share responsibilities and combine their strengths. Group projects can take various forms, such as research papers, presentations, or practical tasks, depending on the context. They are common in educational settings but are also prevalent in workplace environments to foster innovation and efficiency.

What are common challenges faced when working on a group project, and how can team members overcome them?

One of the most common challenges in group projects is coordinating effectively among team members with different working styles and schedules. Miscommunication, unclear division of tasks, and conflicting ideas can also create obstacles. To overcome these, it's essential to establish clear roles, set regular check-ins, and use collaborative tools for transparency. Encouraging open communication and addressing conflicts early can help keep the project on track and ensure all voices are heard.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a group project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Group Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, organizational ability, and experience—often backed by a degree in management or related field and project management certifications like PMP. Familiarity with project management software such as Microsoft Project, Asana, or Trello is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and conflict-resolution skills set standout managers apart. These capabilities are crucial for coordinating teams, ensuring project milestones are met, and delivering successful group outcomes.

Job description

Why Join Alstar?
Since 1969, Alstar Group has been a Western Canadian leader in oil & gas prefabrication, construction, and maintenance. We build long-term careers, not just short-term gigs. If you take pride in laying down clean, high-quality pressure welds in a safety-first, team-driven shop, we want to hear from you.
What We Offer

  • Top-Tier Perks:
Competitive pay, comprehensive health, Dental, HSA Account, and Mental Health coverage.
  • Financial Future:
Group RRSP matching up to 2%, plus Group Life, AD&D, and Critical Illness insurance.
  • $500 Referral Bonus:
Earn extra cash by bringing skilled peers onto our team!
  • Growth & Stability:
Long-term employment, paid safety orientations, structured career advancement, and regular recognition for your hard work.
  • Great Culture:
A supportive, safety-focused shop environment where your skills are respected.

Position Overview & Key Responsibilities

Working closely with the Construction Management team in our Calgary office, you will play a vital role in project execution by managing cost tracking, reporting, and logistics.

  • Cost & Data Management: Enter labor, equipment, and material costs into Viewpoint Field Management software; create daily work tickets and manage the approval process.
  • Reporting & Documentation: Compile daily/weekly safety reports, sign-in sheets, daily cost summaries, forecasts, force reports, and fuel usage logs.
  • Project & Procurement Support: Prepare purchase order requests, material requisitions, progress reports, manpower loading schedules, and coordinate overall logistics.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Review scopes of work/WBS, assist Accounts Payable and Project Services with 3rd-party tickets, and support overall administrative needs.

What You Bring to the Team

  • Experience: 3–5 years in project support (Project Coordinator or similar role) within the oil and gas construction industry.
  • Education: Post-secondary diploma in Construction, a relevant Trade Certificate, or equivalent hands-on industry experience.
  • Technical Skills: Intermediate to advanced spreadsheet skills required. Experience with Vista by Viewpoint and Google Workspace (G-Suite) is a strong asset.
  • Core Competencies: Exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational and planning skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication, proven problem-solving initiative, and a collaborative, team-first mindset.
