Job description

The UVM Health Medical Group Director is responsible for the operational performance of multiple sites across UVMH. For the assigned practices and services, the Directors is responsible for translating UVMH strategy into, and coaching leaders responsible for, day-to-day operational execution. A focus on operational metrics and outcomes from a patient and clinician perspective are critical to success. This individual leads a group of people leaders ensuring consistent execution of workflows, staffing models, and clinic operations. This role partners with Division Chiefs, Site Leaders, and Department Leadership to drive reliable, efficient operations aligned with Medical Group standards and system priorities.
The Director is accountable for:
  • Ensuring consistent execution of workflows, operational standards and patient quality outcomes
  • Coaching and holding supervisors and managers accountable for performance and daily management discipline
  • Achieving budget, staffing, and productivity targets through active oversight
  • Executing patient access initiatives and operational improvements
  • Using data, rounding, and direct engagement to monitor performance and drive action
  • Medical group practice subject matter expertise
  • This is a highly execution-focused role, requiring strong day-to-day operational presence across multiple locations and geographies, with accountability to deliver consistent performance, improved access, and efficient medical group practice operations.
  • Additionally, the Director is given opportunities to lead medical group-wide initiatives regarding access improvement, operations, policy development, etc.

Education:
Bachelor's degree in business administration, Healthcare Management, or related field required. The ideal candidate will possess a Master's Degree in Business Administration or Health Care Administration or a related area.
Experience:
Must have a minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in management (if assigned to UVMMC campus, preferably experience in an academic setting). At least 3 years of experience in health care operational management. Preference for experience leading and managing teams across sites or service lines.
Knowledge/Special Skills:
  • Expert knowledge healthcare operations, finances, business planning, and contract management. Working knowledge of professional revenue cycles, physician compensation, practice support systems and related business operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of internal and external best practices and track record of change leadership to bring performance in line with benchmarks
  • Leads by example, is action oriented and enjoys taking on new challenges.
  • Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lead teams, develop subordinate leaders, delegate, and communicate effectively. Provides leadership in difficult situations/conflicts and reads situations quickly to find common ground/achieve cooperation.
  • Ability to interpret, communicate and utilize data to make decisions and motivate clinicians and staff to
  • continually improve operations.
  • Makes decisions and completes tasks in a timely manner, works well under pressure, and is able to meet multiple competing deadlines.
