Grid Energy Storage information

What is grid energy storage?

Grid energy storage refers to technologies and systems that store electricity on a large scale for use by the power grid. These systems help balance supply and demand, stabilize the grid, and integrate renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Common types of grid energy storage include batteries, pumped hydro, and compressed air. By storing excess energy during low-demand periods and releasing it when demand is high, grid energy storage improves reliability and efficiency of the electricity supply.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a grid energy storage engineer?

To excel as a Grid Energy Storage Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, energy systems, and grid integration, usually supported by a relevant degree and experience in power systems. Familiarity with tools like SCADA systems, battery management software, and certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) or energy storage-specific credentials is often required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration skills are crucial for optimizing storage solutions and coordinating with utilities and teams. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and reliable integration of energy storage systems into modern power grids, supporting energy transition and grid stability.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in grid energy storage, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in grid energy storage often encounter challenges such as integrating new storage technologies with existing grid infrastructure, ensuring regulatory compliance, and managing the variability of renewable energy sources. Addressing these challenges requires strong collaboration with utility engineers, regulatory bodies, and technology vendors. Staying up-to-date on evolving industry standards and participating in interdisciplinary teams can help professionals navigate these complexities and contribute to more reliable, efficient grid operations.

What is the difference between Grid Energy Storage vs Battery Engineer?

AspectGrid Energy StorageBattery Engineer
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in energy systemsEngineering degree, certifications in battery technology
Work EnvironmentPower plants, renewable energy sites, grid facilitiesResearch labs, manufacturing facilities, R&D centers
Industry UsageEnergy storage projects, grid stability, renewable integrationBattery design, development, testing, and optimization

Grid Energy Storage professionals focus on large-scale energy systems that store and release electricity to stabilize the grid, while Battery Engineers specialize in designing and developing battery technologies. Both roles require engineering expertise and often collaborate in renewable energy projects, but their daily tasks and work environments differ significantly.

Job description

Amazon is seeking a self-starter to join the AWS Energy team in pioneering the future for data center utility power by developing and executing the strategy by which AWS delivers energy projects and partners with electric utilities and energy companies across the Americas. This individual will define the end to end (generation, transmission, distribution, backup power) power strategy for scaling and operating AWS' diverse, low-cost energy supply. In this role, you will manage multiple, large scale and technically complex power infrastructure projects across multiple geographies by facilitating close collaboration between both internal and external stakeholders.
Within the overarching strategy, this individual must be resilient in exploring and discovering new supply opportunities (that delivery both near term capacity with an accelerated path to net-zero carbon supply), ultimately converting them into tactically sound and executable energy projects while working to reduce energy capital and operating expenses

Internally, responsibilities outside of implementing the defined strategy include reporting status, risks, mitigations and successes to C level and VP level leadership, as well as influencing multiple cross-functional partner teams in the overall data center capacity delivery business process.
Externally, this role takes ownership of managing utility interactions, coordinating efforts between real estate, engineering and planning teams in site evaluation, project engineering, scheduling and budgeting, including influencing and contracting with the utility, EPC and/or Owner's Engineer to meet AWS' needs. The individual will work in an integrated team to implement a strategy that meets and exceeds AWS' energy program requirements while delivering projects on time, with tangible reliability and cost-saving results.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong energy background and a proven track record of developing and delivering on innovative energy projects. Experience working with regulated electric utilities to develop, contract and deliver medium and high voltage power infrastructure, including related tariffs and supply agreements, is a must

In this role, you will negotiate and execute power supply contracts across AWS regions and create innovative supply structures that integrate our renewable energy portfolio and Support the growth of clean energy via utility partnerships. The right candidate will have a demonstrated ability to think strategically about the business, operations, and technical challenges, with the skill-set to drive tactical execution of project schedules, contracts, initiatives and team goals.
The candidate must have experience in reliably driving initiatives to completion in high speed, constrained and ambiguous environments, with practice in escalating and reporting to many organization leaders and teams across multiple levels. By establishing and growing business and technical relationships, and managing the day-to-day interactions with these partners, you will be responsible for ensuring energy requirements needed to support AWS's global infrastructure expansion are met.
Key job responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive utilities strategy for AWS data centers for AMER regions.
- Manage multiple Utilities, EPC and Owner's Engineers to deliver MV and HV power infrastructure, including negotiations and contracting.
- Develop and execute energy strategies that leverage capital projects (utility grid connections, high voltage substations, energy storage, etc) to reduce long term energy costs

Manage capital budgets for electrical infrastructure and energy projects.
- Work collaboratively with Amazon CFE/RE team to support the development of strategic energy sourcing opportunities
- Execute electricity supply contracts that create new clean energy capacity on the grid (through utilities), reduce cost, minimize risk and leverage opportunities that benefit Amazon
- Manage a portfolio of complex energy projects
- Collaborate with internal teams and regulated utilities on the implementation and management of energy projects to meet the business timelines.
- Identify and develop innovative cost savings projects (capital and operational) and initiatives related to energy infrastructure and supply.
- Responsible for completing due diligence on in-market opportunities and developing those opportunities into cost savings for the business.
- Work with utility regulators to develop policies and guidelines that enable broader AWS strategies and objectives.
A day in the life
Think like a group CEO of Generation, transmission, distribution and backup power companies. We are the ones who are developing the Vision, Strategy and Execution plan of what the future looks like and helping every one in the Energy Value chain to do things differently.
