Job description

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for assisting in the management of the agency’s greenhouse operations, wedding/event rentals, landscaping and the implementation of instructional services for persons served by the agency.


MAJOR DUTIES

Assists in the following duties:

• Management of greenhouse programs and operations; ensures an environment suitable for the growing of plants and the safety of personnel, individuals served, and the public; manages greenhouse repair and maintenance.

• Maintains inventory of supplies and re-orders as needed.

• Determines and maintains markets for wholesale and retail sales; develops inventory projections; orders and plants seeds; manages plant growth in time for sales events.

• Teaches persons served about the day-to-day landscape and greenhouse operations; coordinates with Day Program personnel for the involvement of persons served.

• Maintains flowerbeds at all agency program sites.

• Replants flower beds at all contract job sites.

• Maintains records of monies received through greenhouse sales.

· Assists in providing cost estimates for potential landscape customers; bills landscape customers.

· Manages and markets the wedding/event rental program; prepares ferns and other plants for rental, takes rental requests, schedules pick-up and return of items rented, cleans and maintains rental items.

• Serves as a gardening resource for the general public.

• Plans, develops, and implements curriculum activities; prepares daily lesson plans and monthly goals and objectives using developmentally sequenced programs that are appropriate for persons served; prepares necessary materials and supplies.

• Conducts classes for persons served and teaches basic skills in identified areas of need; leads persons served in organized activities.

• Coordinates with other service agencies, schools, and counterparts in other organizations for referral of services.

• Assists with personal hygiene through planned programs and on a direct, unscheduled basis.

• Assists with assessments and appraisals.

• Participates in Individual Support Team meetings; assists in the development of Individual Support Plans (ISPs).

• Performs general light housekeeping; prepares materials and supplies; maintains equipment for classroom, recreational, or training activities.

• Initiates and maintains appropriate records; completes and submits all required reports; maintains the security and confidentiality of information.

• Serves as bus monitor or driver as required; monitors persons in transit.

• Assists maintenance workers and custodians when necessary

• Assists individuals served at mealtimes.

• Maintains certification in CPR, First Aid, and CPI.

• Performs other duties and responsibilities deemed necessary; not otherwise specified.


KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

• Knowledge of agency policies and of the agency, Alabama Department of Mental Health, and Medicaid guidelines.

• Knowledge of greenhouse management and horticulture principles.

• Knowledge of the delivery of instructional services for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

• Knowledge of ISP implementation principles.

• Knowledge of sales and marketing principles.

• Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.

• Knowledge of basic math skills.

• Skill in the delivery of instructional plans.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Greenhouse Instructor supervises and assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.


GUIDELINES

Guidelines include horticulture principles, agency policies, Alabama Department of Mental Health guidelines, and Medicaid guidelines. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.


COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists related greenhouse management and instructional duties. The unique needs of individuals served contribute to the complexity of the position.

• The purpose of this position is to manage greenhouse and landscape management operations and to implement appropriate and effective instructional services for persons served.

• Successful performance contributes to the delivery of effective services to individuals and to the success of the agency’s greenhouse operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable an employee to perform essential job functions.

• The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee may occasionally climb ladders and utilize their sense of smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move over 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

• The work is typically performed in a greenhouse, a classroom, and outdoors. Work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations and a high school diploma or GED.

• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

• Possession of a valid driver’s license, good driving record.
