Position Overview
The Energy Rater plays a key role in the design and certification of high-performance multifamily buildings by conducting HERS energy modeling, reviewing construction documents, and providing technical recommendations throughout the design process. Working closely with architects, developers, and project teams, this position helps optimize building performance and ensure compliance with ENERGY STAR, LEED, Enterprise Green Communities, Passive House, and other green building programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with green building programs such as Energy Star, LEED for Homes, Enterprise Green Communities, and Passive House.
  • Communicate program guidelines, requirements, and desired outcomes to clients and contractors.
  • Conduct energy assessments and perform energy modeling using HERS (Home Energy Rating System) protocols and tools to estimate energy use, guide decision making, and issue certifications.
  • Work with architects and developers to develop building plans with an eye for sustainability to meet various energy efficiency and green building programs.
  • Analyze data and provide recommendations for energy efficiency improvements.

  • The Energy Rater is expected to be a proactive contributor to the success of multifamily projects by delivering accurate energy models, thorough design reviews, and technical guidance throughout the design and certification process. This role plays a key part in helping project teams achieve energy efficiency and green building certification goals while ensuring compliance with program requirements.
  • Key expectations include producing accurate and timely energy models and plan reviews, communicating effectively with architects, developers, and project teams, maintaining a high level of technical quality, and identifying opportunities to improve building performance through practical, cost-effective solutions.
  • Success in this role means delivering reliable technical work, building strong collaborative relationships with clients and colleagues, continuously expanding your knowledge of building science and energy modeling, and contributing to SCI's mission of creating high-performing, sustainable buildings.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Trade school education, an Associate degree, or relevant certifications are preferred but not required.
  • At least 2 years of experience in construction, energy efficiency, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with HERS ratings, ENERGY STAR certifications, or other green building programs is preferred.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
