What is a GRC internship?

A GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance) Internship is a role where interns assist organizations in managing regulatory compliance, risk assessment, and corporate governance. Interns may help with policy development, risk analysis, auditing processes, and ensuring adherence to industry standards. This role provides hands-on experience in understanding how businesses mitigate risks and comply with legal and regulatory requirements. It is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in cybersecurity, regulatory affairs, or corporate governance.

What do I do in a GRC internship?

As a GRC intern, you will typically assist with tasks such as reviewing policies and procedures, supporting risk assessments, and helping to track compliance with regulatory requirements. You may also work on gathering and analyzing data related to risk incidents, preparing reports, and participating in team meetings to develop or refine risk mitigation strategies. Many interns also help with research into new regulations and assist with internal audits. These hands-on experiences offer valuable exposure to real-world GRC practices and provide insight into how organizations protect themselves from operational and regulatory risks.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a GRC internship?

To thrive in a GRC Internship, you generally need foundational knowledge in governance, risk management, and compliance, often supported by coursework in business, information security, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like risk assessment platforms, compliance management systems, and certifications such as ISO 27001 or basic knowledge of frameworks like SOX or GDPR are highly beneficial. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help interns excel in fast-paced, collaborative environments. These abilities are crucial for identifying potential risks, maintaining regulatory standards, and supporting the integrity of an organization's operations.
