What does a graphics design intern do?

A Graphics Design Intern supports the design team by assisting with the creation of visual content such as graphics, logos, social media posts, and marketing materials. They typically work under the supervision of senior designers, helping to brainstorm ideas, edit images, and prepare files for print or digital use. This role provides valuable hands-on experience in design software, teamwork, and project management, making it ideal for students or recent graduates looking to build their portfolios and gain industry knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graphics design intern?

To thrive as a Graphics Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of design principles, creativity, and proficiency with basic graphic design concepts, often supported by coursework or a portfolio. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is typically expected. Strong communication, time management, and willingness to accept feedback are vital soft skills for growth in this role. These abilities enable interns to produce impactful visuals, effectively collaborate with teams, and develop professionally in a dynamic creative environment.

Interns often take part in brainstorming sessions, contribute ideas, and receive feedback to help refine their design skills. You’ll also collaborate with team members from marketing, communications, and product departments, gaining exposure to the workflows and expectations of a professional design environment. This hands-on experience helps build a strong portfolio and provides valuable insight into the creative process within a real-world business setting.
