Layout Design Intern information

What types of projects and responsibilities can a layout design intern typically expect during their internship?

As a Layout Design Intern, you will often work on a variety of projects, such as assisting with the design and organization of printed materials, digital publications, or marketing collateral. Your daily tasks may include collaborating with senior designers to create visually appealing layouts, ensuring consistency with brand guidelines, and preparing files for print or digital distribution. You may also have opportunities to participate in brainstorming sessions and provide input on design concepts. This role offers valuable exposure to real-world design workflows and teamwork, helping you develop both technical and communication skills essential for a design career.

What is the difference between Layout Design Intern vs Graphic Design Intern?

AspectLayout Design InternGraphic Design Intern
Required SkillsKnowledge of layout principles, design software, basic typographyCreative skills, proficiency in graphic design tools, visual communication
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, advertising agencies, publishing companiesMarketing firms, media companies, advertising agencies
Typical TasksCreating page layouts, arranging visual elements, assisting in print/digital publicationsDeveloping visual concepts, designing logos, creating marketing materials

While both roles involve design work, a Layout Design Intern primarily focuses on arranging visual elements within layouts for publications or digital media, whereas a Graphic Design Intern works on broader visual concepts, branding, and marketing materials. Both positions often require familiarity with design software and are common entry points in creative industries.

What does a layout design intern do?

A Layout Design Intern assists with creating and organizing the visual structure of printed or digital materials, such as magazines, brochures, websites, or advertisements. They work closely with designers and other team members to ensure that text, images, and graphics are arranged in an appealing and effective way. Typical tasks include preparing drafts, revising layouts based on feedback, and learning industry-standard software like Adobe InDesign or Illustrator. The internship provides valuable hands-on experience in graphic design and helps interns develop their creative and technical skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a layout design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Layout Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of design principles, familiarity with drafting or graphic design, and enrollment in or completion of a related degree program. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Adobe Creative Suite) is typically required, along with knowledge of industry-standard layout tools. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with design teams and interpret project requirements. These skills ensure the intern can produce accurate, visually appealing layouts that meet project specifications and support the overall design process.

Job description

We are seeking a motivated RFIC Design Engineer Intern to support the development, simulation, and validation of RF integrated circuits for next-generation wireless and satellite communications applications. This internship is ideal for a student with strong fundamentals in analog/RF circuit design who wants hands-on experience working with experienced RFIC engineers on real product development and help push new hardware innovations forward.

Responsibilities

As an RFIC Design Engineer Intern, you will:

  • Assist with the design and simulation of RF/analog front-end circuit blocks such as LNAs, mixers, oscillators, PLLs, PAs, VGAs, switches, etc.
  • Perform circuit RF simulations including S-parameters, noise figure, gain, linearity, stability, power consumption, etc.
  • Support layout reviews, parasitic extraction, and post-layout simulations.
  • Assist in the analysis of 2.5D and 3D EM circuit models and simulation outcomes.
  • Work across a cross-functional collaborative team of bright RF engineers.
  • Prepare technical documents and reports, and participate in design reviews and brainstorming sessions.

We are considering full-time/ part-time applicants for Fall 2026.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical competency, curiosity, and the ability to take the lead and ownership of a well-defined project. They should also be excited to adapt, learn quickly, and grow in a fast-paced startup environment.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a M.S., or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with 2+ years of RFIC design experience.
  • Strong background in RF state-of-the-art CMOS, SOI, or SiGe technologies
  • Proficient in RFIC design and characterization tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, Spectre RF, ADS, or similar.
  • Deep understanding of system specifications and capable of translating system requirements into circuit requirements at IC level.
  • Experience with RFIC layout and post-layout simulation.
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, or scripting for data analysis and automation.
  • Prior research, or tapeout experience in RF/analog IC design.
  • Comfortable working and solving problems independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English and comfortable explaining technical concepts to the rest of the team.

Benefits

  • Paid, full-time, onsite internship at our Bay Area, CA location with competitive salary
