While both roles involve visual elements, Graphic Programming focuses on coding and developing visual software and interactive applications, whereas Graphic Design emphasizes creating visual content and branding through artistic skills. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in the visual industry.

Are graphics programmers in demand?

Graphics programmers are in demand in industries such as gaming, virtual reality, and simulation, where advanced rendering and real-time graphics are essential. They often require expertise in graphics APIs like DirectX or OpenGL and knowledge of shader programming, with employment opportunities growing alongside technological advancements in visual computing.

How do I become a graphic programmer?

To become a graphic programmer, you typically need a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, along with strong programming skills in languages like C++ and knowledge of graphics APIs such as OpenGL or DirectX. Gaining experience through personal projects, internships, or contributing to open-source graphics software can also be valuable. Familiarity with math, especially linear algebra and geometry, is essential for developing efficient graphics algorithms.

What kind of job do graphic programmers do?

Graphic programmers develop software that creates, manipulates, and renders visual graphics for applications such as video games, simulations, and multimedia. They often work with programming languages like C++ or OpenGL, and have skills in computer graphics, algorithms, and real-time rendering techniques.

3D/4DGS Frontend Graphics Engineer

W3Global Inc.

Cleveland, OH

$90K - $110K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 9 days ago

Job description

About the job

This is a full-time 3DGS research position in Cleveland, OH, with potential flexibility for some remote work and occasional travel. This is a rare opportunity for you to boost your experience in 3D/4DGS and related technologies. As a Frontend Graphics Engineer, you will test and build new 3D/4DGS visualization tools for web and VR. You will gain unlimited access to a large variety of 3D/4DGS raw data and cutting edge hardware to support development. You will track technology trends in NeRF and 3DGS and constantly evaluate new methods as they come out.

Disqualification

You must have extensive experience in 3DGS and have a good understanding of 4DGS rendering. If you are just looking for a SWE job, PLEASE DO NOT APPLY. Please only discuss your past experience relevant to 3DGS (e.g., code, results, etc.), or your application will be ignored. We don't care about your experience in React or AWS.

Qualifications

You should be very familiar with the fundamental aspects of 3D reconstruction, rendering, and visualization. Although knowledge of frameworks like Unity and Three.js is important, we are looking for someone who goes beyond these. You must keep yourself updated with the new 3D rendering and reconstruction technologies, be able to quickly evaluate new methods, experiment with their implementations, and quickly prototype tools with them. If you have worked with photogrammetry, SFM, and MVS, you are on the right track. If NeRF and 3DGS sound exciting to you, this is the job for you. You must be proficient in JS, Python, and WebGL, as many libraries and demo repos are based on those. You should have used Torch and COLMAP in the past. Knowledge in high proficiency data pipelines is a plus. For frontend 3D/4D Gaussian Splatting tools specifically, you need WebGL/WebGPU expertise including custom shader development and GPU compute pipelines. You should understand the GS rendering pipeline, including rasterization vs. splatting, alpha blending, and efficient sorting algorithms. Experience with 4D temporal handling, keyframe interpolation, compression and streaming large splat data is a big plus. You must be skilled in browser-based performance optimization, including Web Workers for multithreading, progressive loading, and mobile adaptation. Familiarity with point cloud libraries like Potree, compression techniques, and WebXR APIs would set you apart. If you've implemented papers from SIGGRAPH or have experience building interactive 3D viewers with timeline controls and quality adjustments, we want to hear from you. Finally, you must be authorized to work in the United States, as we are unable to sponsor H1B in the near term.

About our Client

Our client revolutionizes clinical image visualization. We integrate hardware and software to generate vivid and comprehensive 3D/4D visualizations of clinically relevant digital assets, as small as a cell and as big as your body. Leveraging AI and AR, we unlock novel clinical insights, provide comprehensive visual documentation, enhance diagnostic accuracy, and improve the clinical experience.

Things you should know

We are an early-stage startup. You will be one of the first members of our team, which means you will help shape our culture and build our foundation. You will have more freedom to make critical decisions, and you should feel comfortable criticizing or confronting decisions from others. It also means you must be proactive, responsible, and self-motivated. Working in a very small team also means you may feel a little bit lonely, lost, and unsupported. Administrative assistance is minimal. Policies can be unclear. You should be prepared for that. <10% travel is anticipated.

Interview Process

Pre-interview (~15-30 min): We introduce ourselves, ask basic questions, and determine if we like each other.

Behavioral interview (~30-45 min): We talk about your technical background, previous work experience, etc.

Technical interview(s) (~60 min): There will be one or two technical interviews. The interviews evaluate your proficiency in the skills needed for this position. You will prepare your own development environment and screen share your problem-solving process. We will provide instructions before the interview.

Last few things

You may be assigned to extra startup operational jobs, but we will keep things balanced across the team. We will work with a lot of images relevant to surgery. There will be flesh and blood in our data. Please make sure you are not uncomfortable with those. We value work-life balance, but there will be times of job overload occasionally
