Graphic designers help organizations form their brand and express a particular identity or idea for promotional and advertising material. They are skilled in the manipulation of colors, shapes, fonts, images, photography, print design, logos, and animation, and may use computer software or draw by hand. Additionally, they collaborate with multimedia animators, artists, and other creative types to bring visual concepts to life. Examples of their work include layout and design for brochures, corporate reports, magazines, advertisements, and billboards. Graphic designers may work for a design agency, on the staff of a company, or they may choose to be self-employed and seek out their own clients.

What kind of work do graphic designers do?

What are the 7 main types of graphic design?

Graphic designers work in various main types including visual identity and branding, advertising and marketing, publication design, web and app design, packaging design, motion graphics, and environmental or signage design. Each type requires specific skills and tools, such as Adobe Creative Suite, and may involve different project focuses. Understanding these categories helps designers specialize and build a versatile portfolio.

How does a Graphic Designer typically collaborate with other departments within a company?

Graphic Designers often work closely with marketing, product, and content teams to ensure that visual materials align with brand messaging and campaign goals. Collaboration may involve participating in brainstorming sessions, receiving briefs from project managers, and providing design options based on feedback from stakeholders. Clear communication and the ability to incorporate feedback quickly are key to successfully delivering designs that meet the needs of various departments and projects.

Is graphics design a good career?

It offers opportunities in advertising, branding, and digital media, often requiring creativity, technical skills, and a portfolio to secure employment or freelance work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Graphic Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graphic Designer, you need a solid foundation in visual design principles, creativity, and proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, usually supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. • Location: On-site — Rochester Hills, MI (Winston Collection HQ)
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:30pm (some weekends as needed)

What You'll be Doing

  • Produce high-quality vector art and manage production files across a variety of customer projects
  • Serve as the intermediary between the production and service teams — communicating back and forth on designs to ensure accuracy and get artwork finalized efficiently
  • Build and maintain logos and art packs to customer and brand specifications
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines in a high-volume environment
  • Collaborate proactively with internal teams to confirm requirements, relay feedback, and drive projects to completion

  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud — Illustrator in particular
  • Strong understanding of design fundamentals: layout, typography, color theory, and file preparation
  • Experience working in a production environment with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to manage revision cycles and communicate effectively across teams to get artwork right
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and comfortable managing competing priorities independently
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills in a deadline-driven environment
  • Photography and image editing/retouching experience is a plus
  • Golf knowledge or genuine interest in golf is a bonus, not a requirement

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time while working at a computer or workstation
  • Ability to use hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment, including computers, phones, and keyboards
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and via electronic communication
  • Occasional ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to move throughout the facility, including walking, bending, and reaching as needed
  • Visual acuity sufficient to read screens, documents, and reports

Benefits

  • 401K with company match
  • Health care (medical, dental, vision) after 90 days
