Job description

The Record and northjersey.com, one of New Jersey’s leading news organizations, is hiring for a reporter who tells stories on video. This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by the NewsGuild of New York.

Most news reporters are word oriented.

We want this person to be video oriented and produce 3-5 stories a week, everything from shortform vertical content for social feeds to longer-form video stories.

You’ll be tackling the subject of affordability in New Jersey, which is on the higher end of most cost-of-living metrics. Many New Jerseys residents complain they are being priced out of the market.

We need a reporter who helps our readers navigate and understand the subject of affordability. We are seeking an ambitious, fast, digitally-minded reporter who is hungry to be first with the news and has the ambition to produce videos that set them apart from the herd.

In this job, you’ll come up with ideas, shoot footage and either edit on your own or in collaboration with a visuals staffer. Experience with Adobe Premiere Pro is a plus in this position.

The successful candidate will be self-motivated and adept at growing audience through great content, smart use of social media and promoting their work on TV, podcasts and live radio.

This a grant-funded position and lasts 12 months only from your first day of employment. Any extension beyond those first 12 months is not guaranteed. This position works afternoon and evening hours.

Responsibilities:

  • Research, report and produce compelling video content that informs and engages readers.
  • Provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues and situations.
  • Use video, photos and social media to spotlight breaking news and high-interest events.
  • Use real-time metrics to respond to user demand and reader interest.

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated skill with shooting and editing video.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • One-year professional journalism experience, although recent grads will be considered.
  • High-level communication and time management skills.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to work on-site in Bergen County, New Jersey.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well on deadline and use multimedia to supplement their reach.
  • Demonstrated track record for keen news judgment, ethical decision-making and fair play.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.

Application Instructions:

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

1.    Your resume – one to two pages.
2.    A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
3.    Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you’ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.

It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
